Thumbs down Smooth move, homer

So, whilst I was in the engine compartment I managed to break the handle off the oil dipstick. The stick is too far in to reach w/ pliers and I haven't found any magnets small enough to fit in there. Aside from finding a smaller magnet and without pulling the tube from the block, any idea's?

Something tells me this part is going to cost me an arm and a leg @ the dealership.

O-ring or packing hook (looks like Dental tools). Should be able to get in deep enough with those.

Tried a retractable pencil magnet? Cheap from any parts store. Do you have a bottle brush, like Babbie bottle brush. Slide it into the tube and rotate in the same direction left or right and slowly pull out, if you feel it grab pull gently, the brushes "might" catch and be able to pull it out. Free if you have one.

Good luck.

A pair of hemastats will get it, fairly easily. Most of the resto suppliers have such things, its another surgical instrument.

A drywall screw and a pair of pliers! Screw the screw into the plastic, and grab ahold with the pliers and pull! Has worked every time for me!

I have fixed probably 30 - 40 on various vehicles for my customers. Myself.......I will admit to doing it once on a customers car. That was a loooong time ago, and I have since leaned that it will lay on the wipers just fine , to be installed when done working in that area!

Well, I don't know how everyone else here did it but I broke it being careless jumping on the engine when attaching my trans. When we stopped to take a break and I was climbing out the handle caught on my pants and snapped. It was just what I needed after fighting w/ a trans trying to bolt it up after 3 hours.

It's a simple matter to spring the clip, push the plastic tube up off the nipple in the block, push the stick up and out, push the tube back on, set the clip, and yer good to go..............

Try using an old clothes hanger with a strong magnet attached to it. The hanger is usually small enough in diameter to reach the smallest of places.

Take care,
Dan
