smelling fuel

I had started smelling fuel on my 2001 Ram 2500 2wd last week. It is only noticeable when the truck has been idling or immediately after parking and shutoff. I was looking at the engine yesterday and could not see any indication of a leak.
Then tonight I dropped a wrench and while retrieving it was presented with a view of my muffler, rusted off at the rear and no longer hooked to the rest of the exhaust system!
Could this be where I am getting the smell?
Thanks.....gary

Probably not, look along the frame rails at your fuel lines, also check the top of teh fuel tank for rusted tank sender lines.

check to see if your fuel filter canister is leaking.
