Slow Warming Up
Slow Warming Up
My Dodge is a very cold beast. I have a 190 degree thermostat but even on 40 degree days the truck will not hit 190 unless I take it out on the highway. It will hover around 160 degree and blow lukewarm heat from the heater.
What should I do about this? Do they make a grill cover I can put on in the winter and adjust according to the temp outside? Is there any chance of overheating my truck with one of these?
Thanks...gary

Where did you get you t-stat? Check out my post on thermostat's here on this forum. I installed a new Cummins oem today and I couldn't believe the difference. It cost me $100 and I installed it myself but it is worth every penny. I never had the truck heat like this since I have owned it( Dec. 2004 ) Idles at just under 90 C Metric in low 40's F today and has never done that before. Hope this helps.

napa
The t stat probably came from Napa, but if yours is warming right up, it must have something to do with it.
I figured the cooling was overly adequate and that was what was causing it, as far as I remember it has always been this way.

Get a Cummins t-stat.
Make a radiator blocker out of heavy cardboard and slide it in between the radiator and intercooler.
I cut a 4" hole in the center for airflow to the fanclutch. I've been using the same one now for two seasons and it was free/cheap and you can't see it from the front of the truck.

Update; I have driven the truck a few days now with the new Cummins t-stat and the only problem is I should have done this back in '04 when I got the truck. It heats up quicker, still takes a few miles to get up to temperature but I have heat in a couple minutes instead of 10. The hand hits 90c ( Canadian ) 194 f conversion and holds even idleing and coasting down hill. It has never done that, and I don't know for sure but the truck really seams to run better. The picture above with the t-stat on the left is like the one I installed. Good luck.
PS the outside temps have been just below freezing the last few mornings.

I found the cummins stat will cycle more quickly 180-190 yet even with the large sweeps in temps it allows so much more heat thru the heater core vs the stant thermostat, the Stant brand would run at a steady 190, but heater output was poor, and the higher you turn up the fan the colder the air that came out of the vents....
for me the cummins stat was 124$ ve the 35-40 for the stant.... hands down the cummins was worth the money just from the heat output, the guys in the states dont pay anywhere near what we do here in Canada for a cummins stat

No Local dealer
There are no cummins dealers local and the parts guy at the dodge dealer has one for $75 but cannot tell me if it is cummins or not.
Can anyone give me the correct part number and a source for purchasing the tstat? A favorite Cummins dealer maybe? I am afraid that if I just order it without the part number I will be sending it back.
thanks
