signs of too much timeing
signs of too much timeing
What are the signs of too much injector timeing on a 2002 dodge? I am hopeing that there is a code or something obvious ( other than a rod coming out the side of the block ) like smoke or something if I have too much timing. I don't usually tow, only rack on the throttle when hitting the on ramp.
r u talking injection pump timing you have a blue/chip pump. well from what i know when injection pumps go bad they would tend to loose timing. wore out. but if your wondering if your blue chip pump it self has advanced timing it does. lower rpms under 1900 may cause a timing shudder. as i call it. most pumps that have been advanced to make more power or increase fuel economy would not be as smooth on the bottom end. i do know if i advance my timing on my smarty all the way to 4 for fuel economy when the truck is warming up in colder mornings i have a slight knock but goes away once warm only on cold mornings with the timing on 4. if you are asking about the pump call chip. i dont see anything else in your signature that could advance timing. r u having any symptoms that your concerned about
I do have the Special X pump, but I have lost a solid 2 mpg since putting on the pump. Chip says either the key was buggered up on installation or I got a bad pump. I'm wondering if I was shipped a regular pump by mistake and was going to hook up my Edge EZ to see what happens. I have no codes at this point useing the key method. The truck runs good, just does not have nearly the "kick" it had when passing or going for it on a highway on-ramp. Are there any really obvious signs that I can see that tell me the injector timing is too advanced. Short of melting a piston or tossing engine parts out the side of the block of course. Thanks for ANY input !
I hooked the Edge up when the engine was still warm and the truck ran pretty good. Smooth idle, no white smoke, no surging on acceleration.
The next morning though, temp was in the low to mid sixties and the truck was ok at idle, but as soon as I put it into gear, the truck started surgeing and almost died. Turned the truck off after about ten seconds and after unhooking the Edge, the truck runs pretty good. Fuel mileage is up about 1/2 mpg acccording to the overhead liar.
Sooooooo........ it would seem that I have a Special X pump as the truck will not run while the engine is cold and the Edge is hooked up.

I never count on the overhead display mine will say 30 to 60mpg at any given time. were you ever getting white smoke or blue colored smoke on accelerating or at idle. do you have a fuel pressure gauge. if so what was it doing when the truck was surging putting it in gear. warm or cold your edge should be fine. you may want to check all grounds all connections on the edge when its connected. may not of had a great connection. also double check your tap wire on the pump if you tapped the vp wire with the edge if its the edge that you can tap your pump with. most people soder, or posi lock the wires. if it is a possibility with chip and you can do with out the truck for a few days it would never hurt to swap a diff pump in it. not sure about the key when you installed it. does your truck sound differant when is not surging. have a cam sound on a gasser. mine had that long time ago on a pump that was installed and was bad.
I have not seen any white smoke, I did floor it getting thru a stoplight with a moderate load and left a slight haze ( 80% throttle). Truck got up and scatted ! If anything, the truck is quieter now with a smooth idle. I have not tapped the pump, I have a fuel pressure gauge ( has never seen less than 8 psi on this pump ). My overhead is about 1 mpg high on average.
