signs of too much advance for a blonde guy
I had a new injection pump put on my "02 a few months ago with the hope of getting better fuel mileage (my old pump was TOAST ! ), all the timing advance that the truck would be able to tollerate and unhooked my EDGE EZ. Presto ! two mpg less straight from the gate. I've been trying to eliminate all the potential problems and today I hooked the EZ back up to see what would happen. Hmmm, starts ok, runs around the nieghborhood ok, not any noisier than normal that I can tell, no smoke( white, gray or black ) is there any way a "normal" person (i.e. not a full time diesel mechanic) can tell if there is too much timing before a rod comes out the side of the block ? I hate to ask dumb questions, but I have a very limited source to diagnose stuff like this. Thanks in advance for your time .

Well you you didn't say that your replacement pump is the one in your signature from blue chip. i believe those pumps do have a fair amount of advancement built in the pump. then you add electronics ontop of that that has timing too......
as far as how much is to much with that pump. every truck is different. but I would call blue chip and ask about that. but i would really whole honestly think your safe with the edge ez. have you tried it on the highest setting. another thing to tell you no matter how much timing you may have. make sure your truck is near or at full operating temp before you really get on it with alot of boost or rpms with advance timing. your life of the head and such will thank you.
I do notice a slight timing knock with my smarty if im in really cold climate. under freezing. but that could be me or my bad hearing or both.

That's what I would like to know. My truck is currently running the Blue Chip Special X and it is quieter than normal. Would the truck have any obvious characteristics that someone who is not a mechanic would notice ? The EZ is set on the highest setting and I was able to pull about 19 mpg before my pump took a dump. Now I am averaging 17 ( hand calculated ).

..........With ur truck being quiet, engine noise wise, i would say u need ur valves adjusted....mine was quiet also, down on mileage, extra cranking to start, now back to normal.........everybody now says it sounds like a tractor........kim...
