Should I stay away from auto trans?
Thanks, good info and links. I was going to drop my pan for a fluid and filter change so this would be a good time to adjust the bands and check pressures. Mine has no problems right now other than it seems to shift too soon. It is in second within the first few feet of movement. I do have 4.11 gears and stock tires and the TV cable is adjusted all the way out.

I have 265K on my '02 and it still tows my 5th wheel smooth and easy. Proper maintenance and not trying to overwork or race them , they will hold up great. I have had more issues with 5th gear nuts coming loose on 3 5speeds than trouble with my auto. The computers have issues with electrical noise though. But it can be dealt with.
I was at first very skeptical of the auto situation with dodge.
I looked around hard for 2 years before I bought mine, and I test drove a LOT of trucks. What I liked best about the one I bought was the way it shifted. Not too jerky, not slipping, but not "really smooth" either (I mean c'mon, it's a pickup truck!).
I wouldn't be afraid of an auto at all, especially if it's been properly maintained.
By the way, I am also a college student. I priced out at many different places before I bought my truck what it would cost for an auto rebuild. Well, you can get a 47RE rebuild with a good torque converter for about 3 grand.
I know a few people that have had the 6 speeds blow up on em' from pulling big trailers that have had to pay 4-6 grand for a rebuild.
What does that tell ya?
My .02, if the truck looks like it has been looked after, and it seems to shift good: go for it!
