shifting without clutch

Just curious about how many shift with out using the clutch on there trucks. I have done it in both of mine without any trouble. Matter of fact it is easier than the 9spd frieghtliner I drive hauling real heavy equipment

I do it all the time. When I have a cup of coffie in one hand I just keep it on the wheeel and shif. Works great. It might be easyer on a 6spd
DM01

Re:shifting without clutch

This topic has been kicked around on the other site several times. The word from the tranny guys with knowledge of the manual box was not to do it. If memory is correct, reason given was that it was hard on the brass metal in synchro gears and caused accelerated wear.

Jerry

Re:shifting without clutch

I learned to shift from an old school driver to not use a clutch...done properly it shouldnt cause any tranny problems...many times tho if you miss the shift point and start grinding to get it into gear then your causing tranny problems

Transmission builders say to always use the clutch when shifting....if Iam just out driving around I'll shift W/O using the clutch....but If Iam pulling heavy and under power then I'll use the clutch to prevent missed shifts

Re:shifting without clutch

It's definitely easy to do with that I-6. I too have been told it is not good practice to do on a synchronized transmission. Apparently, on the NV4500 anyway, the synchros are kevlar lined. I do shift w/o the clutch occasionally, unloaded. Although at times, I'm really pushing it in hard against resistance, guessing the rpm's aren't quite matching, but no grinding, and that's probably wearing the synchro. I didn't notice any debris in the trans fluid when I changed it out.

i think we all think alike here-

i never use the clutch in either truck[stroke or cummins] after first gear-
but in the dodge i always use the clutch when when loaded down going up hills-- but if im driving on level ground, i think its fine to not use the clutch-

on my 99 ford, i never use the clutch, and the tranny has lasted 157K with one incident close to 30K with the factory pilot bushing- after the kevlar bushing was installed, and new input shaft, its been a good one ;D

i never power shift either truck no matter what

Re:shifting without clutch

Define power shifting. And what RPMs do you guys shift at for each gear. I have always been scared to do this. I have 265/75 tires and 3.55 gears with my 5 speed.

thanks

mike

powershifting~

so your buddy loans you his 5.0 mustang and the only way to make it go fast is to powershift it

shifting gears as fast as possible when racing without using the clutch = broken transmission

i can shift either truck above 1500 rpm and slowly ease it into gear without the clutch and no grind- try it once the truck has warmed up~

just go out and drive the truck like you always do, and pull it out of gear right as soon as you let off the throttle, let the RPM'S drop down 700 or so, and put it into the next forward gear- it should drop right into gear, and then give it throttle once you feel its into place-

HTH
BRYAN

Re:shifting without clutch

i am a owner operator of a tri axle dump truck with a eaton fuller i drive every day. i never use the clutch in the dumptruck.i have tried it in my 98 CTD 2500 several times and my opinion i just dont think it would be good in the long run on these 5 speeds to not use the clutch ,but once in a blue moon dont hurt. 8)

Re:shifting without clutch

I always thought "power shifting" was something you only did at the drag stip and concerned putting a brick on the accelerator and using the clutch. This, of course, is very hard on the clutch as the RPMs jump way up when you disengage to shift. Am I wrong are are there multiple definitions?
As far as shifting without clutch, I LIKE it. Doesn't really matter what it is, it can be shifted without a clutch if you feel it into gear. If you gotta force it then you have pre-existing tranny troubles and are gonna cause more. If you get a grind it's usually due to worn synchronizers. My BMW, gasser with 305,000 on the original tranny, grinds a little without the clutch.
I don't know hwo to shift an unsynchroed tranny without grinding. I've tried it on the tractor without much luck.

Chris
