Serpentine belt tensioner question

I had the hood up this past weekend and was poking around. I notice that the the belt tensioner assembly looks like a dog bone, with one end being the pulley, and the other end I guess a heavy coiled spring inside a housing. Around the housing is an accumulation of a reddish colored dust which I assume is rust from the spring. Has anyone else experienced this?

Sounds like rust from the spring, but I haven't experienced it. I just changed my belt last weekend and didn't notice anything like that. I did need to add a 3 foot pull bar over the ratchet handle to get the new belt on. Dang that this is tough.

Hey Alan,
What brand of belt did you buy and what is a ballpark cost figure? I just hit 50k with mine and it's still got the original belt. I need to get one to stick under the back seat just in case. The present one still looks really good.

TIA,
Dennis

It seems to have more meat than my OEM belt had. I noticed at 70K miles that I was just starting to get the cracks on the ribbed side and the smooth side was very shiny. The Napa belt looks like a good replacement but like I said, I would have bought the Gatorback if they could have got it in sooner. Take care, Dennis.

Thanks Alan,
I think I'll go with the NAPA too, unless I can get the Gatorback for around the same price. But then again,,,, I would really hate to loose that Cummins SCREECH when you shut down.
I kinda like it! ;D
