Retrieving Trouble Codes
I thought that I had seen in here somewhere that you could get the codes on the odometer? Mine seems to be losing power on the hills also fan clutch is coming on more often than usual. I did replace air filter as it was full of ash.
Thanks Mark

Excessive fan operation is usually caused by the oily spray coming from the crancase breather bottle getting on the radiator and clogging the fins. You cant easily see it because it is on the front of the radiator and behind the charge air cooler. Remove the radiator and clean the oil and crud off. Then relocate the breather bottle to avoid a recurrance.

As to the code retrieval, this works on trucks 2000 on up.
Turn key to on (don't start), then off, then on, then off, then on and leave it on.
Watch the odomoter window, write down what you see, when it says "done" turn key to off.
You can then check the codes here:
https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...n&onlynewfaq=1
Or here:
http://www.troublecodes.net/chrysler/96-01.shtml
All should be pretty obvious except one P1693.
This is the code that lets you know you have a code.
Dual computer vehicles such as ours (ECM Engine Computer, PCM Truck computer) don't communicate well with each other.
There are also codes that don't come up with the key on/off method, if you only see the P1693, then you've got one of those codes, and most likely it needs to be read at the Dealership.

Thanks guys that's exactly what I was looking for. I checked it out and no codes came up just said "p done". I already have the breather bottle relocated to the frame rail thanks to this site.

Don't know if its the best way but I just bought some hose and clamps from NAPA about a foot and a half used a brass hose union between original hose and new hose . Got a clamp for conduit that fit around the bottle made a bracket out of scrap steel. Placed bottle bottle on frame rail in area just back from radiator .
