replacement vp44 and lift pump

I know I've seen several threads that say the in tank lift pump retrofix offered by Dodge is not the best, but I can say from first hand experience that that is a gross understatement.
I had the dead pedal blues in Dec 06 and the Dodge dealer here in Las Vegas was quick to replace the vp44 and install the in-tank pump. Yesterday (1/8/07) my fuel pressure suddenly dropped to 6# at idle and down to 3# as I upshifted in city driving.
It is back in the shop.
Moral of the story: DON'T PUT THE RETROFIX ON. MAKE THEM PUT YOUR HOLLY BLUE OR BLACK (OR SIMILIAR) ON (don't forget a filter).
Thanks for your support.

Have you checked your fuel filter. I have the intanke pump and had the same problems till I relplaced the fuel filter. Idle its only gettin 6 pounds but its hard for me to shake it past 4-5 pounds. Its not the best pressure, but since I dont have any mods it will due till I get the money saved up for the FASS.

You don't have to go for the Fass II. I just put on the Fass I and run it thru the stock filter. I finally have piece of mind with 15 lbs of pressure always. Look for some prices on just the Fass pump.I wish I did instead of changing out 3 Carter pumps.

If I went to just the FASS pump, is there a way I can throw in the other stuff the system offers, at a later date if I decided to?

I was wondering the same thing -- can the rest of the FASS system be added to the high performance pump at a later time??

All i can say is my truck was killing stock lift pumps like crazy, I know the fass is expensive, but since it's been on for several months, my fuel pressure stays on 22 and at wot it will only go down to 20. To me the extra money was worth it not to have to worry about the stock lp taking a dump on me.

I had the guy show me how to get the lift pump out of the tank (they said it was ok) and I put on a Holley Black pump (140gph), a pre filter and -6 lines and I now have 14psi at idle and 11 at wot. I will carry the Holly blue in the toolbox, just in case. I feel much better about it now. The PASS was just simply too much money for the unit. I have $190 in the whole setup including the -6 lines and fittings.

okay, I'm totally new to diesels and this is the first time I've had any problems with mine. After reading through all the great posts, am I correct in understanding that I DONT have to put another lift pump in place of my fautly one? i can put ANY pump on it?
