Redline MTL oil mix for the 6 speed?
Just curious if anyone has dabled with the heavy duty shock gear lube. Currently ive been running MTL in my 6spd but the HDshock oil is supposed to have the vicocity of 75/90W? but is supposed to stick to the ghears better and disapate heat. Recommended for ARB locker applications SO im currious if anyone is mixing the MTL witht he HD shock oil in thier 6spd and havinggood results or if i should just continue to run straight MTL?
curious about your opinions reasoning behind the question is i have heard several people argue that straight MTL isnt a good idea that it gets too thin in towing applications and the gear surface temps run a little hot and that they had had better luck mixing sythetic gear lube witht eh MTL .
Id like to get more than just two or three guys inputs who if they are lucky tow 2000 miles a year and put on 15000 a year total. I only clock 15-20k year towing now adays at 25k gcvw or less and 50-70k total so longevity of the 6spd tranny is my concern. previous 6spd i got 350k miles out of running MTL or factory lube and changing it every 30k miles and its still going and was pulling all the time but i wasnt running the kind of horsepower i plan on running now while towing twins coming soon.
Lets hear your thoughts on mixing redline oils or what to do, BTW i have read alot of the previous GL rating threads im more specifically wondering about MTL

Redline offers an MT90 that is available on www.synlubes.com.
That is a little thicker than the standard Redline MTL this might be what you are looking for.
I run MTL and next time I think I am going with a mix of MTL and MT90 or just straight MT90 for the reasons you have stated above.

I first tried staight MTL. Last time I changed fluid, I tried the 3 MTL and 2 MT90. I didn't notice any change when runnig the mix. Don't know if this helps with what you are looking for or not; it is just what I discovered.
PourinDiesel,
I don't know about running straight or almost straight MT90. I might try it next time I change the fluid. My only concern would be the viscosity of the srtaight 90 in colder temps; too thick? I dunno, just thinking out loud. I love my tranny, but if I can find something to make it shift smoother I will be one happy camper.

Straight MT90 is way too thick for the 5600, but it works perfectly in the 4500.
Straight MTL is what you seek for the 5600. DO NOT MIX WITH THE SHOCKPROOF GEAR OILS. The additives of the shockproof oils (which are GL-5 rated) are harmful to yellow metals.
IOW-- GL-5 oil has EP additives which can eat your synchros.
The film strength of the straight MTL is more than adequate for the 5600. I doubt you'd see any pluses to mixing in some MT-90. The thicker viscosity will cause worse shifting when cold, and takes more power to turn the gears.
If you are set on making a cocktail of Redline lubes, stick to the manny lubes like MTL and MT-90. DO NOT MIX WITH REDLINE GEAR OILS. While Redline gear oils are among the very best, they aren't optimized for tranny use.
I'm sure that if you call Redline, they will confirm that their gear oils have VERY limited applications for transmission use.

I would like to swtich but have been told by a 25 year tranny guy not to.....yet everyone raves about the MTL....
Has anyone had any tranny problems with the Redline (MTL) products??

Justin,
What lube do you run in your 5600?
I already run the MTL, but I am wanting more protection for my gears when sled pulling.
I think a cocktail of the MTL and MT90 sounds good.
50/50 probably.
Shifting qualitys arent too much of concern, they are already bad!
Sync's probably wont make it past 20k with this clutch!

Justin:
I've run straight MTL in my 5600 since about 11K miles. I'll never go back!
Beware of running too thick a lube in the 5600. Higher viscosity lubes make it the syncs take longer to spin up and thus can hamper shift quality.
I've had good results with straight MTL. I'd only consider an MT-90 cocktail if I towed heavy and run much higher tranny temps.
