Im asking for a friend.
She has a 03 3500 4x4 that selectivley starts.
They changed the pickup pimp and tested a few other things.

longhorn.....actually, you are in the wrong forum...A 03 CTD has a CP3 pump and is a third gen CTD.

This may be a dumb question, but I'm curious:

How often do those of you who have had vp44 issues service the water separator/fuel filter?

I religiously replace mine (stratapore) for every 2 oil changes (15k). Also, what brand of WS filter are you using?

Just curious

Question

I was under the impression that the VP44 was OK, if you kept your fuel pressure up, watched on a gauge. Is this not true?
Seems like I have read many people getting 100k+ from their VP's.
What are other peoples experience?
I know lots of people have lost their lift pump, then VP44 in short order, but it seems that if they keep pressure up, it does fine?

I never saw below 7 psi on my full-time gauge, religiously used Diesel lubricity additives, changed fuel filters every other oil change, and STILL chunked a VP at 87,000 miles.
But the 98-99 pumps have a reputation for being weak.

Another cause of vp failure is electronic board on top of the pump. whether by overheating or the board breaking, cold solder joints might play a part in the failure also.

Gm ecms during the late 80s were notorious for bad solder joints and connections, I can't count how many of them I replaced

Shovelhead, your new vp has the improved board and innards for the fed ex revision doesn't it?

I know I've replaced over 100 VP's since 99. That's pretty sad considering how small of dealer we are. Mine died at 86K. Was 128 degrees that day and the dead pedal hit. I think I replaced about six of them that week. I still have my original lift pump and it's still staying above 6psi under load. The more I work on the CRD, the more I think I should consider getting an 04.

tenbrooks,
Yes the II HRVP has the "FedEx" board and better vibration isolation incorporated.

JBody is on to something with the temp related failures.
When we had that warm snap around the first of the year, it seems there were 3 or 4 pump failures reported on DTR every week.
When the weather cooled off again, the numbers reported dropped dramatically.

And a rash of us failed last June.............?
I bet there was 15 people claiming failures in two weeks last year right when it got hot (everywhere I mean, it doesn't get "hot" here till at least the end of May)

Question

What are the Pluses, minis of:
Staying VP44
II HRVP
SOVP?
Costs involved? I plan on staying mostly stock with the Cummins recall Lift pump kit & Vulcan. My LP is still OK, but only 25k.

Another good reason to install a bypassable in line fuel cooler. Summer's coming so be ready for a rash of vp deaths.
