Best advice you've ever received?

Sittin' here bored tonight and was thinking about the "Stupidest Things Ya'll Have Done Thread". The people performing these deeds must have received some great advice from (although not always) their folks when said folks found out about the "adventures" (for example: next time you cause an explosion, if it don't kill you, I will).
Anybody want to share words of wisdom passed down to them from a parent, spouse, guardian, friend, military superior etc?

Re:Best advice you've ever received?

First one that comes to mind: When I was about 7 my mother caught me smoking old butts. She said: "You want to smoke? OK, here is a new one, smoke it. And inhale!" When I finished that one with a lot of coughing she forced another one on me. I don't remember finishing it. Think I was green for about two weeks after that. She weaned me from smoking big time. :P

From mom...

"If someone else starts the fight. Finish it."

"If you don't have anything good to say, be quiet. Others will figure it out."

My dads favorite... LOL

"When God was giving out brains you thought he said trains right?" ;D

My favorite line I say to myself when things seem grim...

"This is not a Practice Life So Do It!"

Rods favorite line...

"BaaaAaaaaaaAAAA BBbaaaAAAaAAaaaaA Black Sheep come to get some wool."

"When the Pastor/Judge/Elvis Impersonator/etc says "Do you take this woman",
you pause for effect and say NO!!!!!!

That advice was given me the day before my wedding, I chose not to follow it.
Hindsight being 20/20, I try to pass it on to everyone thinking of trying marriage out.

So far no one has heeded my warning,
they'll come to their senses sooner or later.

From a highly agitated Sheriff's Deputy:

"If I were you, I'd keep my mouth shut son!"

One of the few times in my life I actually took that piece of advice.

Re:Best advice you've ever received?

Best advice I ever got came from a picture my mom used to have hanging on the wall. It contained a quote from the Bible...one I'm sure most of you have seen.

"But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you." Matt. 6:33

I'll hang my hat on that until the day I die.

Re:Best advice you've ever received?

Living my life with abandon, racing cars, trucks, motorcycles, snowmobiles on the track and on the street. My Dad says to me 'Son you're gonna die if you keep this up'" With typical 19 year old bravado and armed with the knowledge that I was way smarter than he would ever be I told him that when it was my turn, I would be taken, not before and not until. Dad looks at me with that look reserved for idiots and says. "That may well be true kid, but you can chose how much hurt you're gonna live with until then." Didn't sink in for about 2 years, but I try to remember it every time I consider one of "those" (whatever they are) activities.
