rebuilt nv5600 still grinds
I just had the 6 speed in my '01.5 truck rebuilt by the local Dodge dealership. They put new synchros, seals, clutch, pressure plate, throwout bearing, and hydraulics.
The truck is bone stock, and has 230,000 miles on it.
Before the rebuild, there was an annoying grind whenever the transmission was cold and the outside temps were below about 70 degrees and I shifted from 3rd into 4th gear. In the summer time and after warming up in the winter it would go away. The grind was so annoying to me that I just would shift from 3rd directly into 5th until the trans warmed up.
I was hoping that with the rebuild the grind would be gone, but lo and behold it still does it. Is this to be expected since I would think the 3-4 grind would have been caused by worn out synchros but now all the synchros have been replaced?
Does anyone else have a similar experience with their nv5600? The rebuild wasn't cheap, and right now I am kind of strongly disliking my truck after paying all that money and still hearing this grind. The trans shifts much better than it did before the rebuild, but as mentioned the same problems still exist when it is cold as existed before the rebuild.
thanks

We had 2 nv5600 rebuilt by diff. builders both started to grind right away I was told by 1 shop that it needed to seat and would go away after a while it had the mopar fluid in it and after a few weeks it shifts normal now . the other one was built by High gear and did the same thing they had me put the mopar fluid in because they shipped it with Mobil delvac 50w it is now fine . I would just make sure you let the builder know and see if it goes away, also one of then had 3rd gear replaced because the syncro was buried in the gear
Thanks rebal. I let the dealership know about it and they just said something like "we replaced the synchros but the rest of the parts in the trans are still the same as before", which wasn't really a good answer, but I'll just deal with it the cold 3-4 grind the best I can and hope it goes away after the parts get a little more wear on them.

Thanks Pat - the Dodge dealership actually used the Mopar master nv5600 overhaul kit. I don't have the part number in front of me, but it is on the invoice which is in the glove box. I believe it is R0056003AA, but I can double check.
I believe the R0056003AA kit has seals, synchros, and bearings, even though the service rep just said something about having replaced the synchros. He was probably speaking from a service rep perspective and not being technically accurate like the service technician that actually rebuilt it would be. The truck was in the Dodge dealership for 3 weeks while they waited to get all the parts, and I remember the same service rep saying "master overhaul kit" once at the beginning of the process. He just forgot and said synchros this morning when I asked him about it but he no doubt meant synchros, bearings and seals.
At any rate, I do hope the grinding gets better. It may have to do with what you said about the dog teeth. They did say at the dealership that they don't rebuild many of these transmissions. They gave me a 1 year warranty on everything, so I hope that at least will give me some peace of mind on this.
thanks again

If they got the master rebuild kit, 100 percent it had new bearings.
Give it a bit of time, see how she does.
It is going to be hard to find parts if you need new gears. Can you shift it very easy and get it to "drop" in without grinding?

When they were doing the rebuild, I wish I had been able to get a look at all the internal parts while it was in pieces. I don't know if any or all of the gears, mainshaft, etc. were serviceable, but the service rep told me that everything looked good but that the mainshaft had some scoring on it.
I've lately just stopped using 4th until like an hour into driving, but before the grind caused a nervous system overload with me
and while I was trying to use it, I would do as I always have and double clutch from 3rd into 4th, even pausing perhaps 5-7 seconds before dropping it into 4th. The doggone thing would still grind!
Thanks for the good insights on this - I'll sure hope for the problem going away after I've put some more miles on it. I don't even think I've been 200 miles yet since the rebuild.

If the service guy "knew" as much as he tried to think he did he would have called them blocker rings. They aren't referred to as synchros in the kit IIRC.
Keep a detailed log of your contacts with them and who you are speaking to and all receipts. As far as I would be concerned the warranty shouldn't start until it is right with you.
As for the grinding, I'm sure you know after 233K that you need to let the trans catch up to speed between shifts to have a smooth transition between gears. Mine is most finicky between 4 and 5 and I usually pause a moment before it drops together.
If a dealer did the rebuild it almost 100% has the correct fluid in it, but I would inquire and log the answer.
New blocker rings are sharp and pointed and may need to wear in a little, but this shouldn't take more than a few miles of around town shifting to round off a little.

Thanks Kurt - I confirmed with the dealership that they used 5 qts of the Mopar 4874464 fluid.
What disturbs me is that aside from the fact that I can now drive the truck once again - the transmission is no longer locked up like it was just before the rebuild - the transmission has exactly the same characteristics it had before the rebuild, ie there is a nasty 3-4 grind until I've driven the truck for maybe an hour, and it is hard to go into reverse sometimes, just like before it was rebuilt.
I think I might have put about 200 miles on the rebuild now, but I'd have to check my logs to be sure.
I'm really dissappointed in the truck and transmission, especially since I paid $2800 I didn't have to get it rebuilt. It seems like now that the odometer has cracked 235k the problems my truck has are of the sort that I can no longer fix myself, like the transmission and a metallic noise that I alluded to in another post earlier today.
It's like the truck kept all its quirks that it had before, but now I'm $2800 poorer :-) The only thing I have to show for it is that I can once again drive the truck, but I'm wondering for how long even that will last without more expensive repairs.
thanks again for your reply

And that is still short 1 qt, which should be put in thru the top. I have almost 300k on my trans. I changed the fluid 2 yrs ago and it started grinding 3 to 4 when cold but that has gone away.
Thanks Copenhagenjunkie - I'll add the extra quart. I've always overfilled it until they rebuilt it, and even then it was a 3-4 grinding beast. It is encouraging that you have 300k on yours - maybe mine will settle down and get better, though I wonder.
Thanks. That's the best plan of action for me at this point. I'm going to head to the Dodge place this morning and get the service manager to ride in it with me and show him the grind. Once he agrees there is a problem, I'll "ask" them (read that make them, lol) have a look. If they don't want to do anything about it I'll escalate, if it comes to that.
