Rear Differential?
Rear Differential?
I just had a fluid change and band adjustment done on my 98.5 CTD, The mechanic informed me that the rear differential bearing was noisy and needed to be replaced. The quote was not cheap. Got her home jacked her up shifted transfer case into neutral, I turned and shook the the wheels and drive shaft nothing seems sloopy or noisy, and you know I won't hear a thing while she's running
. Could someone point me in the right direction on this, I'm heading
up to Nothern Maine in a month and I'm concerned. Thanks

His only comment was rear diff bearings are making noise, the same is written on my work receipt. Not sure I'll have to give him a call. Either way not sure how he detected the noise I can't hear of feel anything obvious
Thanks

I just had all my bearings replaced in the rearend after 250k. You can definetly hear a noise if one of your pinion bearings is going out. I could also shake the drive shaft up & down. I imagine if you get a reputable person to do it, it should cost no more than 6 to 7 hundred including new ring gear, pinion & bearings. I shopped around Atlanta & found the whole set with R & P, plus 2 pinion bearings, 2Carrier bearings, & shims for a little over 300 bucks, Made by DANA too.
