rear differential

have 01 2500, bigger injectors, turbo, MRBP exhaust, edge hot box etc.. With all these great mods I manged to blow the rear differential. Spider gears r bad. # on differential is 42971. Its a 10 bolt. Factory as far as I know. Its not a posi, want to replace the differential with a posi and something stronger what r my options. Any suggestions?

some body said the info of what rear diff you have is either under the hood or is on the glove compartment door. a good replacement would be a D80 with anti spin

If your 2500 truck has an automatic transmission, it will have a Dana 70, if it has a manual transmission, it will have a Dana 80. I suspect yours is a 70, and if you want to upgrade the whole rear axle assembly, I would suggest finding a used Dana 80 out of a 2500 with a manual trans. It's about as durable as you can get.

There are stronger aftermarket limited slip differentials you can get for your 70, but the strength will still be limited by the smaller bearings in the 70, which won't stand up to the added power as well as an 80.

Mine has a Dana 80. I recently found some shim material on the fill plug during an inspection and had a new Detroit True-Trac installed during the rebuild... So far it has been great. It seems to be stout and very street-able.

I like the TrueTrac mod. I've got an open diff and at some point would really like some type of LSD/Locker. The TrueTrac would seem to be a good solution to the infrequent need while eliminating the relaibility issue of clutches.

Were all rear ends equipped with LSD or just select ones?
