rear brake rotor issue

I was looking the truck over this last weekend and found both rear rotors on my 01 were getting grooves in them. Both sides of each rotor.

My first thought is the pads wore down to rivets and started gouging the rotors.

I pulled one wheel and the pads looked OK. I pulled the caliper and found the pads were glue ons and at approximately 50%.

I did notice that the pads looked like they ran over the outer edge of the rotor by maybe 1/16 of an inch. there was a lip on the edge of each pad which broke off during removal.

There was no major dust build up and the brakes have been working great.

Has anyone else had this issue?

Any idea's what the cause would be?

Sounds like the pads were replaced and the rotors were either not machined or replaced. Can you post a picture of the pad surface and rotor grooves?

Mine did this also, even after i put new calipers on. New pads and rotors solved that problem.

The calipers and pads were replaced and rotors were turned around 15,000 miles ago.
I have done many brake jobs and have never seen this kind of wear on rotors without having pads worn to the rivets.
I am getting ready for a trip so probably won't have time to get any pictures posted

I have seen nothing but problems on these rear disc-equipped trucks, mostly caused by all the gravel, slush, and abrasive grit kicked up by the front wheels and absorbed by the rear disc brakes. I imagine your problem would have the same cause- probably some gravel that got wedged in there and ground up.

They operate fine so I just run 'em.
