Ran out of fuel

First thought it was the Injection pump. Stopped dead in its tracks. Then thought it was the lift pump, but it was making noise, so I thought it was good. Took out the fuel filter, saw that no fuel was being pumped into the canister so I changed the fuel filter since I had it out already. Then I thought the lift pump was dead. Turns out I was out of fuel (figured it out after a couple of hours). Filled it up and it still would not start. I cycled the lift pump 15-20 times to no avail. Then I cracked cyl 1 and 3 and cranked it until all foam was out of the lines. put it back together and it started up. Now I guess I have a problem with the sender in the fuel tank because it said I had 3/8 of a tank left. It was bone dry. My tank is 36 gal and I put in 35.97 gallons.

Same thing happened to me right in the middle of a busy intersection. What a pita. Seems the sending unit is a relatively common failure. The sending unit itself is not that bad but again a pita you have to drop the tank or raise the bed. Consensus seems to be raise the bed enough to get to it.

Re:Ran out of fuel

With all of the lift/injector pump failure stories, we forgive you for checking last the thing you would have normally checked first.

I'd bet that running out of fuel here still beats having a full tank "over there"

Re:Ran out of fuel

It was a good lesson- not to rely on what the gauge says. I should have gone underneath and tapped on the tank. You bet- I'd rather be here than there.

BigK- Did you get my PM about the scotty?

Re:Ran out of fuel

I have run mine out twice both times I still had some diesel left but, it was low and I took a corner to fast. I think it slushes to one side and I suck air. Hard lesson learned twice now :
