Hi guys, I'm new here and I don't own my Ram yet but will be buying soon. I was wondering if you know how the second generation Cummins Rams compare to the third generation in terms of fuel economy. Also, does anyone know just how much better on fuel is the 12V is over the 24V engine?
Also, between the second generation 12V and 24V, is the 24V the only one that is able to take a progamming module (power programmer or whatever you call it)?
lastly, with the module, is it possible to program for better economy with either engine?

I think you need to ask yourself how much you want to spend, there's a pretty good spread in the three units above. Yes, the 24v is the only engine of the 2nd gens able to use a "box, tuner, electronics, etc." for fuel and timing.
Sure there is THE K.D.P. killer dowl pin but other than that oil, coolant and that is all they need besides a little bit of tlc every now and then. I have a second gen 24 on IP #3 and it is just a crap shoot depends on what you want to do i got my truck cheap so i went with it. I am getting about 26mpg on the highway got 18 with my 25ft 3 horse w/ living area and it is a steel trailer. I was inpressed by it.

The issue with the 24v.s is fuel pressure. If the lift pump provides adequate flow to the VP-44, the VP-44 will be fine: The problem is that the stock lift pump is in the wrong place and usually fails (Undetected by the owner) causing the VP-44 to wear out rapidly. If there is any weakness in the VP-44, any fuelling increase is likely to bring on a failure.
More importantly, how new and nice of a truck do you need to be happy? For the price of a stock Gen.3 truck, you could have a hot 24V Gen.2 or a really hot 12V.
Happy hunting! Randy.

HOCKEY! My lift pump was dead when I got the truck... Discovered that when I changed the fuel filter. I put on a new FASS HPFP lift pump back on the frame rail, installed a FP guage and drove it a year and a half with no problems at all. No dead pedal, no nothing. VP44 just kept on trucking And got 20 MPG highway. It's a crapshoot.

Black that is hand over head is not right i had my garman for the mph and i know that 8.75 per 1/4 tank is right so miles into the tank the wife can vouch for it because i made a huge deal about it. I think it help when you keep your foot out of it. I have seen 16 pulling a trailer but the best was amost 19. Just depends.
