question about white smoke and high egt's

my buddy has a 2001 dodge ram 2500 .. we took a long trip down south to california and then over to moab with our rock crawler .. anyway when we got into some mountain passes on the up hill parts he is making about 22- 23 pounds boost but very high egts , and then on the down hill parts when you are kinda gliding his truck would let out HUGE plumes of white smoke .. smelled really bad but nothing like diesel fuel .. but the white smoke would happen only when you are going down hill ,, any info would be great on either of these topics

If he has no power adding modifications (box or injectors),
then I'd have to vote for a sticky injector, or slipped timing.

Injector would be easy to check, pull them and get them popoff tested.

Slipped timing would have to be the VP44, no repairing, only replacing.

Yes, VP44 is the 2nd gen 24valve injection pump.

HI rick here. im the guy with the 01 ram 2500. ok, we were over weight. truck with camper and tongue weight aprox 11000 lbs. plus hauling trailer and rock buggy approx 5500 lbs. i have a PDR tripple disk torque converter and a valve body upgrade. i run a comp edge box and an AFE air intake.325 rear wheel horse, driving down i would notice power loss. no throttle response. approx between 45-60 mph. put the pedal to the floor. then the engine would rev up, trans would down shift, and then all was good. it did this alot on the way down to california. then gary noticed the white smoke, no load, coasting down hill. intermitantly, using engine compression to hold back.
dnt know if this had anything to do with it, but on the way own, heading up a summit my egt hit 1550. for a few seconds, i was not paying attentioin. it happened 2 times. within 6 hours. now with no load on my truck it runs great. and hints??starts good, idle good. shifts good. no loss of power?
oh yea, i have a new lift pump last year and my turbo and injection pump were replaced approx 40,000 miles ago. new from dodge.

i noticed when coming down the mountains and its steepness carries you down (when you find yourself not giving it any go pedal) you will get white smoke when you eventually do get on the go pedal. the entire time its coming down the hill without giving it fuel, its cooling the combustion chamber to a temp that wont allow you to burn the fuel well when it is added again...kinda like starting your truck when its cold outside. this could lead to a power loss until the temps rose to allow for a complete burn.

what was your comp set at? 5x5? where you lugging the motor? at what speed did you see 1550*? and what gear ratio and tire size are you running?

23 psi of boost doesnt seem like a lot with 11000#s and a comp! was that the max boost or the boost that was present when the high EGTs were present? do you have a boost elbow?

put all info in your sig to help us diagnose the situation...

i forget if a boost elbow can be used on your hy-35, maybe you need to add a turnbuckle to the WG to have a manual boost control, IIRC. you have a pretty small housing, 9 cm^2, for that load and comp upgrade.

i let the experts take over this one...
