Question
I have a 99 CTD auto that has developed a shifting problem. The check engine light has come on and the codes are P336 and P1690 and I was told that it is the crank position sensor. The shifting problem happend the same time the CEL came on. Are these problems related? The truck shifts fine to 3rd but won't shift into overdrive. I say that and on the way home from auto zone it shifted fine.??? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Either code will turn the mil (cel) light on. The crankshaft position sensor is located left rear of block in line with crankshsft. The other code is one of famous codes indicating a dying VP44. The crank sensor might be more likely for non shifting to OD.

Well it better not be the VP dying! It's brand new!!! The Auto Zone printout says: IPM crank sensor signal does not agree with ECM crank sensor. Explanation: ECM detected injector pump module crank signal did not agree with ECM crank signal. Probable causes: 1. Open or shortened fuel sync signal. 2. Failed ECM.
Seems to me that if I replace the Crankshaft position sensor the the two will agree. ??
