Puke bottle????

Correct me if I am wrong, but I have read that after an oil change, it is common to smell oil for roughly 500 miles. I have experienced this and I am wondering if the recovery bottle...located at the front of the engine needs to be emptied from time to time. I read somewhere that it should be done every second LOF. (lube oil filter). Just curious if this is common practice and how much is involved in doing so.

BTW....this is a GREAT forum.....I have been reading, and reading, and reading.....I love the info and the participation within is great.

Great job guys...keep up the good work

Thanks

Yes, if you still have the puke bottle it needs to be serviced occasionally. I do them with every oil change. Better yet, I usually eliminate the bottle and extend the breather hose to where it's out of the shroud area, to keep the oily dampness off the rad fins. I find that you will still get the oily smell right after an oil change, it comes directly out of the breather tube.

Yes, you do smell that oil smell for a short while after a oil change. I also do recommend that you remove your "puke bottle" as oppose to servicing it. For me, its less to keep track of. I extended my tube straight down not tying to any moving parts, of course(shortest route). There are others that take this tube and run it up a few inches and then across the top of engine and then down. This method is more lengthy. "To each his own".

You know my radiator looked like the pictures JBODY posted. I relocated the puke bottle to behind the motor and I had to pull the radiator out because I was suffering from massive overheating while pulling a trailer. It was a poor design by Dodge. Do a search on custom crankcase vent. It is less then $20 to relocate the breather and get it painted.

I've yet to modify mine yet (I can't stand drips under my truck, whether they are supposed to be there or not). I service it at each oil change, and it's a messy PIA job.

Crawl under the truck with a 1/4" ratchet, about a 3in extension and a 10mm socket. The bolt holding it on goes through a wire tie that wrapped around the bottle.

Once I remove the bottle, I clean up that area with gunk or similar, and squirt a little into the fins of radiator as well, then rinse. This makes it even messier to put the bottle back on.

Someone on here (sorry can't remember who but he'll be along shortly I'm sure) relocated to outside the frame rail, I like that idea for easier servicing, and still no drips in my driveway.

If you run a new hose to route away from the radiator, make sure you don't have any "U" in the hose for water (condensation) to collect in. After I ran a hose to back under the cab, I read of someone's extended hose freezing and pressurizing the crankcase to the point of burning oil. I checked mine and sure enough there was just enough of sag to allow it to collect and freeze and mine was almost frozen and blocked.

I have never serviced mine, that is until now. I wondered where all the mess was coming from on the radiator. I made a high pressure water cleaning tool to clean the radiator and evaporator, but it appears I was going in the wrong direction. Thanks guys.

How long is the hose if there is no bottle there? And where is this hose exactly? If i look under my truck there is a hose about oh i dunno, 5 inches long, and has a bit of oil on the end. Sure enough there is oil covering some spots of my radiator, and so i was wondering if this is the hose(more on the right side of the engine when looking at it) and if i could just extend it down a few inches or a foot, etc?

Thanks

Dinner

Mine comes to the end of the timing case (I'm pretty sure), so it would be pretty hard for oil to get on it from my hose. The sway bar is a grimy mess though. Its on the driverside (right from the front), directly infront of the IP. Hose comes up, does a 180, and down to the bottom of the engine. When it warms up, I'll snap a picture.

Well, I changed my oil today. I took my trouble light and shined it down in front of the motor to fix my puke bottle problem and low and behold what do I see? No puke bottle. All thats left is the hose and lid!!! So I made me an extension and I'm good to go. Thanks Guys
