Problems on my camping trip...
So here's my story. I'm driving along today after work. Got the camper hooked up, dog, kids, wife and all our stuff is coming with me. Everything is going great for the first 2 hours. Then all the sudden, my cruise control freaks out and the truck goes nuts until I turn the cruise off. I look down on the dash and my ABS and brake light had come on. Also, the speedo is going nuts. After about a second or so, the speedo calms down and shows the proper speed. I'm not too worried about it because the truck was still running strong, no issues. What's weird though is that when we pulled into the truck stop, the speedo would cut off and go to zero when the truck is under 35 mph. It does it every time now, and the lights are still on, on the dash board.
The expert I talked to on the phone thinks it's the VSS causing the problems since the speedo is freaking out AND the ABS is coming on. Since the ABS reads the vehicle speed, I'm hoping that's all it is. Truck still runs great, but those lights on the dash are annoying me.
Gonna take it down to the local auto parts store in the morning to see if they can pull a code from it. Anyways, thought you would like to hear my story. Also, if you have any suggestions or if you've seen this before, please let me know.
PS - I think I'll go ahead and do the cam sensor while im at it, since the truck is over 100k miles.
Thanks.
Jack

Re:Problems on my camping trip...
Jack, it should be the VSS in the rear axle or the cables and connectors for it. Naturally the cruise can't work if it's got no speed input, and the rear wheel ABS feels a little lost too. I'd try and swap the sensor ( really not much work, not too pricey too) and see what happens. Or just pull and clean it, if there's metal debris on it, which would make it miss seeing the teeth of the tone wheel.
Good luck, and I hope you'll be a happy camper soon again ;D

Thanks for the input sir
I appreciate it. I haven't messed with it yet. I was going to try and find a dealer that would be open today, but I don't think I'm going to have much luck since it's Labor Day Weekend here. Anyways, I'll work on it on Tuesday and post the results.

I don't think you'll need a dealer to do the first check: simply get under the truck, locate rear differential ;D (hard task on the 2WD
) and look for the only electric cable going to it. Voila, the VSS. You'll have to remove the bolt that attaches the sensor, the sensor shield and the brake line.Pull out the sensor and disconnect cable. Clean sensor and oil O-ring lighly, reinstall sensor, shield, bolt (torque 24Nm or 18 ftlbs, put brake line holder on the stud, put on the nut.
If not too corroded all this can be done within about 30 minutes on the side of the road.
I'd suggest that you try this ASAP because due to this failure your rear wheel ALB can't work and this can be extremely bad news with a camper.
Have a nice holyday

Re:Problems on my camping trip...
Isn't there also a sensor on the transmission somewhere?
When I installed my truespeed (speedometer correction) the instructions said to tap into the wires coming off the transmision going into the ABS controller.
Tapped in right at the ABS controller, so I don't know where those wires actually went to.

never fails something always happens on the weekend when your going somewhere, couldn't happen on the way to work or something or inlaws. Oh well at least its not real major and you made it to where you going. Good luck on the way home Heath

UPDATE:
Got a new speed sensor and put it on the truck. Once it was in, everything was fine and all the errors and lights cleared. The one that I replaced was in the rear differential. It was broken on the top of the sensor. Thanks for the help guys, and special thanks to Don Ramer who spent about an hour on the phone with me walking me through troubleshooting. Huge help.

I replaced the rear snesor but the lights are still on.
I finally got the Cummins Quick Check II but all I got to do is figure out how to use it.

I had thought about getting QCII, but I may go for RR4. I haven't decided yet and I keep going back and forth on that. I like the idea of being able to pull codes and do all kinds of other stuff while I'm driving, especially since you cannot pull up codes on my truck without a scanner.
