pre filter

Went by the Cummins dealer a while ago and talked to the guys behind the counter------the guy recommended using a pre-filter before the normal LP. Said to make sure its a least a 30 micron fil. said he had a hot shotter used to come in and bought a new LP every 60,000 miles until he tried the pre filter, said it worked great

Any truth in this--------, mine is completely stock, no problems so far and don't want any

No pressure gauge yet

Unless you have an issue with getting contaminated fuel; why make it any harder on that poor little LP to pull fuel than it already is. If you want to lend it a hand get a big line kit, a relocator kit, and a draw straw. I can not see that pre filtering at 30 mic is going to do you any good unless there is some fairly large junk floating around in your fuel.

I wonder what the fuel is going to do to the filter when it gets real cold outside.

Nothing! I take care of two trucks whose lift pumps draw fuel thru 30 micron prefilters and have never had the fuel gel up. And it gets pretty cold in Toronto, goes down to -30F sometimes.

Pre Filter ? Racor & Perma Cool filter install instructions state,
Install on suction side for water seperater function to work
correctly,
All OEM Water Seperator/filters I have seen ( GM/Dodge )are on pressure side, Is there a basic problem here?

The reason I ask is , I have another brand truck on which
I installed a pre filter per Perma Cool instructions,
IT Traps water, every 3-4k miles I get a 1/2 teaspoon of
dirty water, On the OEM filter, for 30k miles ( prior to installing the pre filter)I never got a drop of water.....

Makes me think that the OEM filter only traps water as a function of a LOW area vs
the Racor & Perma Cool actually seperating the water out
of the fuel......

I installed a Racor filter/water separator on the suction side of the lift pump on a freightliner truck (not the one in my signature) and I use a 30micron element and I never find any water at the bottom of the bowl. The only explanation I can come up with is that you must be buying contaminated fuel and you need to change suppliers.

The micron rating of the filter element should not have any bearing on it water-separating ability. I was told that by an engineer at Davco and they specialize in fuel-water separators. I am puzzled as to why you are getting so much water. Fuel is becoming cleaner, my 2006 Sierra pickup came with no serviceable gasoline filter and Freightliner has made the fuel-water separator optional, they sell many trucks with no fuel-water separator at all.

??? live in florida, HUMID ?????

I did not understand the water either, but was impressed with the Filter/Seperator, I assumed that the water was going through the IP prior to installing the pump,

I change the pre filter at 10K ( looks fairly clean when removed) and the OEm filter at 20k, ( it stays a lot cleaner than before )

I have the big line kit from Vulcan including the larger in tank tube, and pump relocation kit. Now to finish the fuel system I installed a pre lift pump Raco 30 micron filter. My diesel book says the lift pump needs pre filtering for two reasons; 1) is the lp will break up water droplets to very small droplets allowing water to pass thru the secondary OEM filter. 2) the lp itself will last longer without sediment and dirt running thru it.

The screen DC put in the tank (thier small pickup tube) can eventually clog, so we tore that out for the right way with a pre filter or primary filter.

I've been running a prefilter in my 1st Gen for a very long time now. You can see it doing it's job because the bowl is part way full of water and dirt. Before it was always too much for the Oem filter to do a proper job. I always buy name brand fuel where they refill tanks often.

Fuel pressure went down only by a 1/2 a pound when running new primary filter. Not bad, but, increased fuel lines and prefilter beats DC's poor design to make you trade it in more often. Increased fuel lines allows for more filtering as it should be done according to many diesel books.

Diesel fuel is very hygroscopic and water cannot be seen in it, so pre water seperator is very important.
