power transfer problem
I have a 1999 Dodge 5-speed cummins. When I try to accelerate with a load going up a hill, I get an increase in RPM's and NO increase in power. Then the RPM's drop, then the power increases and seems to run normal. I recently replaced the fuel pump - but not the injection pump. I doubt this is related, but just in case. My husband thinks the pressure plate or the torque converter is slipping. Please HELP ME FIX MY TRUCK!
I will try getting someone to look at this. Are you crazy - not telling my husband? What do you think the mechanic will say when a woman brings in a truck? Dollar bills - she won't know what wrong with it!!!!!
Thanks for your help.

Go into the user cp and then go to edit profile and enter into your signature. List what kind of pickup you have 3/4 ton/year
1ton/4x4,2wd,auto/manual/mods you have done so far/etc. This helps out a bunch when you have a problem. Yeah I would think this would be a torque converter problem/clutch if you do have a 5 speed manual . It will also show up at the bottom of your posts.
Also welcome this is a great place for info.

I have about 138,000 miles on it. It is the stock clutch.
On a side note, I had to replace the fuel pump, which also had ruined the injector pump. I think I caught it this time, but I just replaced the fuel pump AGAIN, I dont' seem to have to replace the injector pump - but the mechanic said it was just a dodge problem. I had them put a guage on the fuel pump, so that I don't ruin the injector pump. Is this a problem with the truck, or am I doing something wrong when I drive it? I am the main driver, and I don't drive it hard. I've done quite a lot of pulling with it.
I really appreciate all of you guys helping me with this!!! Thank you.

The lift (fuel) pump is a common problem on our trucks. You did the right thing by installing a fuel pressure gauge. You should never see your fuel pressure drop below 7-8 psi even under wide open throttle. Otherwise you probably need to replace the lift pump.
Always start by replacing the fuel filter and you should also verify your readings with another mechanical gauge to confirm that you have a pressure problem.

Dodge does have some problems with the lift pumps. As far as fixing the problem, the guage was a good first step. There are a couple of ways out there to fix it(FASS,RASP)
though they are kind of expensive(how many lp's can you buy for a FASS) You might try Wildcat Diesel they have the Max FLow system for under $200, I believe this system replaces your stock fuuel lines and fittings with a larger system. This will be my next fix.
As too your clutch...If you bought the truck used you will have no idea how the truck was treated before you bought it. If you bought it new then I would say 138,000 is not too bad if you do a lot of heavy pulling.
