Power steering pump problem

Yesterday, my ps pump puked fluid out the top rather than turning the wheels. It has done this twice (once last winter), usually when I don't have time to let it warm up for very long. It also groans in colder weather. Will synthetic fix this? How do I change the oil, and which oil is best to use? I am in Vermont, and the temps can be from -40 to 100. Thanks

there was somebody else on here that had that problem and I believe it was the accumulater that was causing this.

Thanks guys, I will check that out. My brakes make a little noise when I step on them when it is cold, same noise the ps pump makes, so maybe it is the accumulator. Hope I can fix it for less than 600 I will probably change the ps fluid too. Thanks a lot
