Herb, thanks for posting that reply. I've been a little concerned about the mileage I've been getting towing my toyhauler, but after reading the experts list of expected economy at given parameters I feel much better. I certainly hope that you get all of your problems worked out. Thanks again

For Comparison
Herb, sorry to read about your problems. Looks like we have the same setup. Wish I had 4.10s though. Pulling around 8500 lbs with a lot of surface above the cab I get nearly 13 mpg running 70-ish. Empty I am at 19mpg and change. Heat while pulling I-70 through Colorado rarely went over 200. The truck is much more powerful pulling than my previous 2001 5.9L Magnum with 4.10s which got 5 mpg towing. Keep on the dealer. Your truck has clearly got a problem.
Good Luck!

my so just contacted me after offloading a 4 seat sleigh from the very back of the trailer and said it is pulling like a different truck now. (still has the wind break up) will be offloading another in about a half hour and will then be able to drop the windbreak.
sounds like the wind drag is asking the truck to do more than it is capable of doing for some reaason?

ok folks here's the latest. just talked to my son who is heading west in idaho now and he has unloaded the 2nd carriage and dropped the windbreaker on the trailer and says the truck will pass everything on the road and has got 185 miles on a 1/2 tank of fuel.
so, as long as it doesn't have much wind resistance it is fine add some wind resistance and i can outpull it with my 318.
????????????

From your previous posts, it sounds like the dealer replaced just about all the mechanical parts that could be causing your problem. ( Of course there are injectors or actual engine damage). About the only thing left is the ECM. Obviously, it would be a physical impossibility for a good running 2001 CTD to be out performed by a 318. (460ft/lbs torque vs. about 260) I don't know what else to say besides stay on the dealer to make it right.

i guess i am in a unique position with my dealer because i have been with them so long. i do not have to "stay on them" per se as they are more than willing to do anything they can for me. Problem is (i think) is that they are scratching their heads wondering what to do. i print pages off this forum constantly and take to them and offer to them as "suggestions"
