Popping noise while cornering

I make frequent trips on some very winding, crooked roads. I have been hearing / feeling a popping in my steering while cornering and its getting worse. I have checked my tie rod ends and they seem tight. Then I changed the angle of my tilt steering wheel, it seems to change the dynamics of the popping so I suspect that maybe there is a universal joint type of thing in the steering column that may be wearing out ?
Has anyone else expirienced any similar problem ? Am I barking up the right tree with my assumption ?
Any help out there ? Anything else I should check before going to the dreaded dealer ?

Thanks ,

Dewey

Mine is doing the same thing right now and It feels like a u-joint in the steering shaft. First thing to check is the track bar and see if it is still good. If it ever quits raining I'll get a chance to look at it.

there is a slip spline on the steering shaft between the column and box. i have slid the boot away and worked grease into the slip spline that has helped some that were dry and binding.

If it pops when you turn the wheel severely either direction then my bet is on the track bar. If its bad enough it will do it with the truck in park and turn the steering wheel all the way both directions. Don't by one from NAPA I was using theirs and had to change three of them in a month and a half.

Sorry this is so late in the game... haven't been on the board much lately.

THis exact same symptom, on mine, was the front swaybar joints popping in & out of the socket during cornering. It did feel like a steering problem, but I think that was just feedback through the wheel... Having a couple friends help me rock the truck back and forth while watching the swaybar links showed the problem. Good luck!
