P0216

I got this code. Now what? I've been having fuel issues for a while and it all started with the lp giong out. Replaced that, then the truck wouldn't start after being off for more than a couple hours. This started right about the same time my fuel heater started to leak. By now I was using vice grips on the fuel line to keep a prime till morning. Just recently I replaced the check valve on the Vp return line. Had a week or so with good starts (without vice grips) untill this morning. After having the wife crank while I bled injectors, she started right up. I replaced the filter housing with one that does not leak at the heater, added a new filter and bought a hend-held press gauge. At idle I have 14-15 psi after the filter and 12 at 3000rpm. I then bought a code reader and found P0216 sitting there. Is this the end of my Vp or could a seaping fuel heater cause me to lose prime over night?

Your seeping heater would let you lose prime.
I suspect the quick connect fitting on the suction side of your lift pump may now be allowing air into your system with the motor off. What did you have the vise grips clamped on?
Moving the lift pump to the frame rail just in front of the fuel tank and adding a big line kit with big fittings and clamps will address your fuel delivery issues...really need to take care of this before installing another injector pump or it'll get hurt too.

The rubber section of line between the fuel filter and the Vp. I have new seal washers at all the banjo fittings and I don't any evidence of fuel lseeping out of them so how could air get in?

Listen to this. I have a 2002 5 speed, had dead pedal , 0216 code for about two weeks, deaker said IP was bad. Not under warranty, I kept driving it with dead pedal until the motor got up to operating temp then the truck ran fine. I've gone 7 days now with no dead pedal and the truck run great. I went to auto zone and used their code reader to clear my 1693 an 0216 codes. Codes have not come back for 4 days, truck still runs great. If all you have is the 0216 code now, and you haven't bought a new IP, keep driving it. No one can tell me why I had the 0216 code and dead pedal, and now its gone. I've done alot of research on these pumps and you can get them anywhere from $1000.00 to $1600.00 depending on what you want. Don't pay someone to put it in, do it yourself, its not that difficult for the mechanically inclined

When the code was cleared it may not come right back. Rest assured it will most likey rear it's ugly head again. My threw the code twice before ip was changed....

While the most common cause of the P0216 code is a dying injector pump, it is possible for a supply problem, such as a restricted filter, to cause it. As a Dodge tech, I saw it more than once.

I got the code many times during late 2005 and early 2006 on my old 02'. The VP44 was replaced under warranty.

I was luckily never stranded, but she was goin'!

I just went outside and fired the truck right up after letting it set for about 16 hrs. Seems the only time it won't start is when I'm late for work..

Driving is not the problem, STARTING IS! Right now it's a crap shoot whether or not my truck will start in the morning. I work in the aviation industry, I couldn't possibly tell a pilot to "just keep flying it because we can't find the problem".

Lucky for you, if your engine stops, you're not heading for the ground. If you want to fix the problem, throw a new VP44 in. But you never know how far they will go after the code pops up.

Have you tried clamping the fuel line after shut down after you put in all the new parts? Maybe you are still letting a little bit of air in the system when it sits overnight?

I just got the upper section of the ff canister in yesterday and it started fine this morning. I had gone for about a week and a half without clamping and it was starting fine during that time. It was yesterday morning when it fired for less than a sec then just cranked. I had the wife crank while I cracked and we got it started right up. I have something intermittent here so I know it's not fuel delivery, I'm leaning away from from the electronic side because the truck runs fine once started. This leads me to something mechanically wrong with the vp. I guess I'll get one on order which opens up another can of worms.. Where to get one, should I upgrade? etc...

I think I'll do the in-line check valve trick until I research Vp's more..
