Overheat??
Well it looks like I need a water pump
A small leak turned into a big leak on my way home then the belt slipped off
I shut her off just as water temps reached 240 on the dash. I read codes and I threw a code for overheating.
So water pump, gaksets, belt,... anyone have cummins part #'s?
I'm glad I've got some fresh Redline oil in there- anybody think I pushed it too far or did I catch it in time? Do I need to change the oil? I've already got more coolant.

What code did it throw?
I think I would change the oil, 240 deg is a bit toasty.
I had a simular problem a week or so ago, all the bolts that hold the pully on the fan bearing fell out causing the belt to snap etc etc, dad was driving. He looked down (at night) and saw a light on stoped and discovered the problem. Repaired and off he went. I changed the oil and continue to watch everything very close.
Head gaskets dont like that much temp...

I used my smarty to read the codes and it said engine performance decreased due to overheat, I forget the #. Well its been towed and its in professional hands now.
I would not worry about the oil. Oil temps normally run in the 200-210* range. Your Redline is good to well over 300* for short term operations...say 5 min.
If concerned....drain a small amount (2 oz) and have oil analysis done... but I would not bother.
You can pull dip stick (when oil is cold) and wipe it off with your fingers. Put unused oil sample on other hand and rub both oils between thumb & 1st finger. Also smell both samples. It's what I call a poor mans oil analysis. Your looking for major differences in smell & feel. Doing this will tell you a lot more than you might think!
If oil is OK ...engine is fine!

A brief run up to 240* shouldn't hurt anything. Mine went that high once when it popped the lower hose off the radiator. And that was in the dead of winter so the block would have been hit by cold air really fast. 30K miles later and no issues.
