Vp44 Overheat
Vp44 Overheat
THis is a repost from the crash..
I have a 99 dodge ram 24 valve 235 hp.
WHen hot it will not start... I can cool the Injection pump (VP44) with a garden hose and it will start .
It does NOT flash a code!! I assume the pump computer is over heating. This started after I changed the fuel filter which lead to the transfer pump change. Yes here in Virginia the daily temp is in the high 90`s.
I see lots of info on pumps here but not to much is said about the pump modifications IE what companys that incorperate the new fedex electronics in their overhaul. I see that BLUE CHIP does but WOW what a price. Are there others??
Thanks for being here, this is one of the best forums I have seen!!!

That fuel cooler idea is being talked about as a possible solution. Using a small cooler(like trans cooler) but would need a bypass for winter time use, unless mounted in the return line to cool the fuel going back to the tank.
Pepper, be careful cooling down the VP by pouring cold water on it while it is hot. Just like pouring cold water on an engine, particulary the head or the manifold, it can crack, in this case you can do damage to the pump like cracking the housing.

Since the electronic head is mounted directly to the pump. The electronic portion would benefit as well from a fuel cooler. I will take a look at work and see what fuel cooler Freightliner is running on there MB4000 engines. If I remember right, it is mounted under the cab.

Take a CPU heatsink / fan and zip tie it on you VP44. This will also help dump heat. The fans are 12 volt already! I'm waiting for a good heatsink and fan to show up here in my computer shop for a trade in then I will mount it on the VP44...
I keep my fuel tank at least half full for longer residence time in the tank and a chance to cool off after being returned. Fuel treatments should help with friction and it's resulting heat too.
A tranny cooler mounted in front of my intercooler, got another problem free 20k out of my VP, after it started giving me dead pedal symtomslast summer, until it took a dive this summer. I have it plumbed in the return line after it tees from the head and VP. I will leave it on after I get my new pump. I feel the cooler, 1/2'' fuel line and a pressure gage, It should be problem free until the pump mechanicly fails. I also see no need to bypass it of in the winter time,5* is 5* whether the trucks sittin in the driveway or going down the road. I've also been considering some kind of heat sink as mopar1973man has mentioned. Take this for what it is worth but I would run without one.

We might also look into using a PELTIER HEATSINK as well...check it out

Just a wild hair of a thought... You could mount the radiator fan in cab to dump heat in the summer with a/c on... or mount it up front somewheres.... I think the cab idea is better... Less bugs in the lil' cooler/radiator. I don't think it can dump that much heat in the cab...
But that would take care of the vibration problem...
