I don't know that I HAD to, on my 99, but the piece of mind was well worth it. I would do it on any truck older than 2000. It just doesn't make sense not to, since it will cost a heck of a lot more if you drop that pin.

I've had serveral early 24Vs where the pin stood out from the case towards the gears.
Stands to reason the pin could have come out...

If I ever do a cam swap I'll probably tab it then, but until then I'm not worried about it.. I've been on this site for a while now and don't recall ever reading about KDP problem on a 24 valve truck..
