also check crank seal and powersteering-vacuum pump seal....there is an $8.00 seal kit for the vacumm-power steering pump if it is leaking.

Leaking Oil Is A Good Thing

Leaking Oil Is A Good Thing, as Martha Stewart would say.

I own a lot of cars and my Ferrari Chat Group says a leak is a good thing, It means there is oil in the engine/trans.

It's also a good rust preventative.

Get under the truck with some rags and brake parts cleaner; spray and wipe until the front cover, oil pan, ip, vacuum pump/power steering is clean and dry, then start your truck and use a flashlight to look for obvious leaks. Lying on your back with oil dripping in your face is not comfortable, but is the most effective method. One place to look is the two bolts that hold the 2 halves of the vacuum pump together. A lot of times these bolts back out and cause leaks that are attributed to bad seals. Also put your finger over the opening in the road draft tube (engine vent). Don't build up too much pressure, but check to see if oil is seeping between the block and timing cover. If it is, you can pay about $1100 to replace the front gasket, or you can clean it with brake parts cleaner or starting fluid, then lay a bead of silicone sealer all around the block/timing cover gasket, let it air dry overnight, then start the truck and recheck for leaks. Also check the front crankshaft seal. If the front of the engine is dry, check rocker box covers or rear main seal. Oil leaks are a major nuisance, and a DOT magnet, but are not as hard to remedy as everyone thinks. Hope this helps. Good luck and good hunting.
