Alright this is pretty simple but bare with me i want some input.

I changed the oil on the truck yesterday. I replaced the drain plug because some retard had stripped the 3/8 drive out a little and made it a sob to get out. Now however it is leaking around the new drain plug. I loosened the drain plug let it splurp some oil around the hole hoping to knock any crude out and then re-tightened the drain it still is oozing a little though. Ideas?

Bad new drain plug?
Wrong drain plug? looked the same and it fit (not that the first time the guy gave me the right one).
Still some crude fowling up the seal?

I can't remember if our drain plugs have a brass washer on them or not. If so maybe check to see if that is in place?

 

the old one and the new one both have rubber gaskets on them or at least i think the old one did i know the new one does. Ill check tomorrow.

Do you think that new washer needs to be squashed down it pretty thick looking while the old one was real flat. Am i feeling it getting tight due to the washer not being flattened when in reality i need to put some wheaties into it to squash the rubber washer/gasket?

I have a tendency of breaking things because i easily over tighten them with out realizing. How much force really do i need to apply to the drain plug? Ive always screwed them in then tapped them a little to get them tight is that about right for these situation?

The proper torque spec is 44 ft-lbs. I'd probably go 35-40 ft-lbs. and leave it at that if it's not leaking. I too have a tendency to overtighten stuff (or used to), so I try to stay right at spec maybe a little less to make up for error on my torque wrench.

 

thanks im still mad though that a brand new drain plug at the same tightness that i normally apply is leaking.

 

I think i fixed it i loosened it one more time let it drain some oil then tightened it back up. I gave it a few more wheaties then i did the last time and its not leaking so who knows. I know im going to keep an eye on it though for awhile.

Mine would always have a smudge around it between changes. I got a new drain plug seal and pulled it down to #40 like WCBCRUZER said and it quit. Next change I put a Femco on it and don't have to mess with it anymore. Kurt
