Oil Filter Check Valve

After my last oil change the top inch of oil is draining out of the filter. Thinking this was an oil filter problem, the filter was changed 2 more times with the last one a different brand. Where is the check valve located? Thanks for your help.

It takes 5 to 7 seconds to get oil pressure after shut down of 10 minutes or more. When the filter is removed oil is not at the top of the filter. I know some thing is draining the oil out of the filter but do not know why. I run Rotella oil and think it started after a oil and filter change.

Mine has done that before, I spin off the filter (Fleetguard) and the oil level has dropped about an inch, making the change much less messier. Other times it has remained almost over full and run all over the outside of the filter making a slippery mess. I haven't taken into consideration anything like shut off time or angle of truck etc. I just take it as a bonus when it drains back a little and streamlines my oil change! Kurt

This is my 6th CTD and they all do that. Makes for an easy oil change.

I use Rotella too, ALWAYS

It is hard to believe that there is nothing wrong with 5 to 7 seconds on startup with no oil pressure. Before this last oil change it was never noticed that oil pressure was zero for this time. Five seconds is a long time with out pressure. I think there is a problem if it leaks down this much but do not know what is wrong. Thanks for being helpful to me.

Theres a spot on the filter housing to mount a gauge. Mount a gauge on the housing and compare it with the factory gauge. I'll bet the factory gauge is slower to respond.

Try the Mopar filter Bazdad. I find that the mopar and some fleetguard (can't recall the part #) will make a mess when they are removed. Most of the others (aftermarket) will spin off and the oil will be 1-3" below the top of the filter. Cheap filters make my life easier. Just try a Mopar filter once and see what I mean.

I run Statropores on my truck and it drains down usually. Doesn't always do it though.

Interesting, I took a Napa filter off my truck when I did the first change and it was down a bit and didn't spill. The Fleetguards always spilled over upon removal. Its had 1 Napa in there because I couldn't get a Fleetguard in MT at the time. Just used another Napa over the weekend. The FG I took off spilled all over. I have been using 1 gallon freezer ziploc bags to contain the mess. They work well and are thicker and less likely to have any holes in them like the grocery bags. KM

After several tests and changes the filter has been changed to a K&N HP-4003. The good filter that was draining down was a Fleetguard ordered from one of our sponsers. Any one that is runing their Cummins with filers that drain down needs to change their brand of filters. It is bad for an engine to run without oil pressure. Thanks for every one that replied. bazdad
