NV5600 temperatures

NV5600 temperatures

I'm curious as to the running temperature of an NV 5600 with Amsoil or equivalent. I installed a temp gauge and haven't had the occasion to pull really hard but I can't get the gauge to register. Gauge is Stewart Warner and starts at 150. I've called them and the sending unit shows resistance on the ohm meter and the gauge goes to high end when sending wire is shorted to ground. SW says all is working but trans feels hot enough to be over 150° but maybe not. I am wondering what others are getting for temps under normal conditions.

Throw the sender in a pot of boiling water to make sure it's working. 150 is pretty hot to touch, 140 is about as hot as domestic hot water can get and most of the time that is enough to give you a "scalding" sensation. FWIW, I haven't seen my NV4500 go over 180 pulling a 5 ton trailer in 100 degree temps.

Maybe get a gauge that starts around 100F up to 300F or so?

Knowing the temp of your tranny is good. Most gear operated drivetrain components will run in the 150*-180* around town and on the freeway, and run anywhere between 180*-225* while towing. Your concern should be that it doesn't get above or too far above 225* since thats when gear lube starts loosing its ability to lubricate and do its job. But that doesn't mean that knowing what all temps are all the time is a great way to make sure everything is working correctly. Why not look into a regular temp gauge and replace either the drain plug of the fill plug with a reducer so you create a place for the gauge sender.

The temp guage in mine, ISSPRO mechanical starts at 140 degrees.

When the trans temp shows on the guage depends entirely on outside temp. In the winter months and anything below say 40/50 degrees, you will be lucky if the temp gauge moves at all.

Warm weather and towing are a different ball game. Average 70/80 degree day, your everyday driving around town should show anywhere from 140 to 160 give or take, continuous highway empty will run it up around 170/180.

Towing, the sky is the limit depending on outside temp, your weight and whether you pull in 6th or 5th gear. I have shown temps as high as 250 degrees.

The 5th or 6th gear question is where you can "adjust" your temps. Running is 6th gear is actually hotter on the trans than 5th. When my temps start climbing when I'm towing on flat or moderate hilly terrain, I downshift to 5th, within minutes, the temp will drop. It's just a matter of watching the gauge and shifting accordingly.

Not sure where your sender is mounted but I have a bung welded into the lowest part of the drivers side PTO cover and yes, like yourself I run Amsoil with the 6 quart overfill.

Once you see the guage showing temps, especially when its warm, you can see how your driving style will affect the trans temps.
