NV4500 Removal Instructions
HEY ALL
I have decided to let a shop do the rebuild on my tranny to replace the 5th gear nut, but I am going to pull it from the truck and re-install it myself to save some cash. I have found instructions about how to fix the 5th gear problem on the tranny but nothing that goes into detail about the actual removal and re-install in and out of the truck. Any of you good folks out there know where to find a step by step guide on doin this.

I'm around 140,00 but they haven't been easy miles on this truck. If you do any pulling I think you can count on it happening and it's not a cheap fix. For anyone else dealing with this I think I would just recomend a new rebuilt tranny or going to the 6 speed unless you can tear down the tranny yourself. Parts for this thing have run $800 so far, but that also includes new bearings and seals while it's out and so far the cheapest place I have found and trust to do the rebuiled has been $400 with me pulling and re installing the tranny. That's not much below the cost of a new one and then you still have the old one to put up for sale. IMO you would come out cheaper in the end.

AFAIK, remove all the lines, take out the driveshaft, remove the shifter, remove the crossmember, support the tranny, unbolt it from the engine, slide back. It sounds easy enough. You might want to think about removing the transfer case as well. That would make it a lot easier.

FIRST IS A PORTA POWER 13mm 8mm wrench 15mm 16mm sockets 14mm ratchet wrench 3.5 foot of extensions and ohh about 30 min of time and its out ohh ya you will also need a phillips screwdriver,5/16 nut driver and a 10mm or 3/8 socket I forgot... And a cresent wrench good luck... I THINK THATS ALL..

No portapower needed, no spreading of the frame. The ends of the crossmember is very slightly tapered so that the cross member only goes out one dircetion. Try to hit it out the other way and it hangs up real bad. This is why some feel the need to force it out.
To be honest I don't remember exactly which direction it goes but I think it is knock it foreward and up and it will slide right out. At any rate, take a hammer, hit it one way and it will get tighter, hit it the other and it will come out. Its no big deal, really....

i just went through the same ordeal on a '00 because i replaced the clutch and input shaft/bearings. you do not need a porta power to spread anything. the frame and front crossmember are both tapered- tap up and forward with a big hammer to remove. i found it easiest to support the tranny with a jack once its bolted back up and, with the trans mount removed from the crossmember, start working the crossmember in from the upper rear( my transfer case was removed for this and was still off at this point- very easy still for me to reinstall after the x member was in with a tranny jack). there is a ''sweet spot" where it will mostly slide right in. a few light taps afterward just to fine tune the bolt holes. i put a bolt in every time a hole was lined up (without nuts) and it worked fine.
