Unhappy NO A/C - Blows fuses

2001 RAM DTC with 84K on the OD. My A/C was working last fall, but now when I turn it on it blows fuses. Anyone have any ideas? If my warranty doesn't cover it - I'll have to fix it myself.

Thanks,

John

when you say it blows fuses i assume you mean for the compressor clutch. disconnect the wires to the clutch and see if it still blows them. i have seen some clutches short to ground.----pete

I'm guessing it's something electrical... Just kidding. I would take a look in a manual and see if there is a way to test the compressor.

You also might give us some more details, for example. Can you hear the compressor cycle? Does the fuse blow as soon as you turn the a/c on or does it run a while and then blows the fuse.

First do as Pete suggested isolate the compressor clutch from the picture by disconnecting.Have plenty of spare fuses or a circuit breaker to temporarily replace the fuse until you find the problem. Also if a supression diode is used it may be located in the harness in line or at the plug(havent looked lately)that would be a probable source of trouble as from time to time they can short.Other than that looks like some wire tracing and inspection may be in the future.

Thanks guys. I called the dealer here and have an appointment with them on Saturday the 22nd - the dealer says my 100K extended covers it with a small decutable anyway. I don't have much time - or the tools to really get into testing the electronics - but to give you more information here we go.

The fuse for the A/C blows right away - no clutch activation at all. So - I'm guessing the compressor is shorted out. But I really don't know... I'll let you know more when I have an answer from the dealer..

Thanks again guys..
