New Water Pump (Gates)

Just installed a brand new Gates Water Pump last friday.

The old WP was leaking very bad. The newly installed pump is now leaking -noticed yesterday, took a sample of the leaking fluid, but was unclear as to what it was, today took a sample of the fluid, no doubt it is anti-freeze and it is right under the water pump.

My first reaction was to tighten the two 10mm bolts holding the pump to the engine. So I have done this.

Next I will check the weep-hole for leakage.

Has anyone else installed a Gates water pump with similar issues?

Interesting.

Did you use a sealant or gasket with the instal?

If the weep hole is leaking you have a bad bearing or seal in your new pump.

Hopefully you got it locally and won't have to wait for delivery from an internet sale.

Thank you for the reply.

The pump came with a gasket, the old pump was put on with some sort of rtv, and it ended up leaking like a sieve.

When the old pump came off, the attachment at the block looked clean enough (no rust) so no more RTV. I'm not real sure RTV is even needed with these things, if it was going to leak, it should have done it right away.

When draining and replacing the coolant in the system, no rust was noted either.

I do not have a mirror with me now, but will be checking weep hole ASAP.

This was an internet buy, I have a local cummins place up the road, so I'll just get my money back for this one and buy the cummins part....

I went with this one as I read decent things and Gates is a good company.

Maybe the install is bad and not the part.

no gasket involved, only an O ring

I would second the bad part from the start if the other stuff isn't causing the leak.

I agree Gates is a good parts source also.

However, I learned to always use Cummins parts on anything regarding the engine.

Weep hole not leaking...

Now the pump is not leaking at all, even sitting over night.

I am perplexed as I took it to my buddy's shop and it was bone dry, he looked at me like I was an idiot.

Anyway, I am taking it back tomorrow to remove pump, put engine sealant to make sure it mates to block well and be on my merry way.

o rings do not need or use sealant ......do you expect 2 bolts to create enough equal pressure to seal? even with a gasket? (which is not used with a cummins 5.9 water pump)

Never leaked until old pumps 'went bad'


Both bolts equal length. Assume same torque
across line, why wouldn't they create equal pressure?

Am I to assume part is bad then?

with that type of "o ring" the two bolts would be sufficient to seal, but with with a gasket, no

if you have antifreeze coming out of the pump mounting surface, you have a BIGGER problem

the water pump "internal" seal keeps the 2 fluids apart, if the seal goes bad and does not keep coolant where it belongs, there is a weep hole drilled for the coolant to escape and not let it go into the oil.

it is mounted where there is zero oil pressure, the pump makes water pressure, so again if the seal leaks under or not under pressure it should come out the weep hole not the water pump to front cover "external" mounting gasket/o ring/grommet
try installing the water pump without the o ring and see what leaks

you are right, i am wrong, i got my engines mixed up

i had a brain fade, i just did one on a 3406E and a Volvo loader, both gear driven, forgot these are belt driven.

I'm trying to be a pain here, but how sure are you that it's leaking antifreeze? I had the exact same thing happen to me, thought sure it was the water pump and found out the leak was something far worse. It was oil leaking from behind the cam housing.

Definitely coolant. Had the proper color and smell.

As an update, I put a new pump on and it is not leaking anymore.

The old "New Pump" was leaking at weep hole. That pump lasted 200-miles. Wow.

The good news: Genos Garage is an upstanding company. For what it's worth I've done a decent bit of business with them and will continue to do so.
