New vp44
this took me a while to figure out, peep this fresh knowledge :
My 98.5 Didnt have a bracket on the VP to the block - sweet, two less bolts.
On the gear cover, front of the engine, use both hands and turn that round protrusion. It unscrews - doesn't pop off.
and just other info:
The swap sucks in the summer time, during the day, with the engine hot.
also, it's not too pricey, since you're there it may be a good idea to replace the camshaft position sensor.
The two bolt-holes in the gear used to press the VP out are the same thread as those 3 holding the throttle to the block.

Without that bracket on the rear of the VP 44 , I can pretty much tell you that you will be replacing that gear housing in the next six months. like HID said , get that bracket in there and save yourself some money.
I bought the one from blue chip diesel. It has a different computer design somehow to prevent the heat cycle problems. Chip said is was made for fedex because they had so many failure with them so cummins changed something in there so the computer can handle the heat. It was 1600. I am game to try new stuff so ill dish the cash to hopefully have a better product. i hope i dont ever have to do it again but machines fail so o well.
Texas A to answer your question - his core charge is an additional $1400 refundable when he receives the core. Makes the whole thing an expensive proposition but I'm gettin ready to order one from him to, hope it's worth the extra money. That's alot of missed lunch meals in my world.
Whithout intending to hijack this thread, I saw someone mention replacing the Camshaft Position Sensor while your doing this change. Is there anything else handy to do while you down there?

They all have a bracket, the older one is a strap bolted to the block with a round spacer welded to it and the other half bolts to it with a bolt going through the spacer. The spacer likes to break off or the bolt comes loose and falls out. The new one is a two piece cast iron design and is very sturdy.
