New VP44?

New to site, have read some posts on site. A shadetree DIYer, Haynes manual user. I get DP only after driving 40-50 miles, on hills, and can mash pedal until tranny (auto) downshifts, truck will take off fine. 01.5-2500 stock cummins 5.9. 121K. (owned for 20K)
--Autozone codes: 0126 (IP) and P1698 (ECM-2 maybe)
--0 fuel press at filter inlet and outlet (at IP test port) using 0--100psi shcrader gauge with directions stating "do not use on diesels"
-- Can feel LP run at starter bump
--changed filter, would not bleed at filter inlet, got trickle at outlet on IP, cranked up.
--Did APPS voltage reset (4.6 adj. to 5.0 like sticker. stripped one screw head, tightened with visegrips.)
--Did APPS batt. cable off reset.
--Wrapped Alt. wire in tinfoil, and will test on way to Cummins tomorrow.

In the past, truck seemed to run better with full tank. My guess: The LP is shot, my fuel gets too hot (didn't know it recirculated), and my IP is going. But I don't understand why the truck runs fine until hills after 40 miles, and the truck will downshift and take off after mashing pedal. (maybe timing deal?) Any advice appreciated. Plan on new LP, not $1100 IP. But I don't like walking on highways much. Thanks.

Better start saving fast for that IP. With the zero fuel pressure you toasted your IP.

Thanks. Plan on a visit to O'Reilly's for a new Carter LP, then driving it. If DP persists, a new IP.

5string 2 i notice your in N.C. Diesel Injection in Greensboro can rebuild your pump usually in a couple of days less than a $1000 with the standard one year warranty, hate to say it but your going to need them .

Thanks. Real Diesel Inj. service is up the road in Mocksville, NC. Their web site adv. $1075 and 12 month warranty. After reading Snoking and Thomas posts, may go to battle with DC if Cummins' warranty applies to 2nd owner. NC attorney general office usually helpful.

Bought my truck in December of '07. Drove it for a month, then checked the fuel pressure. It was zero. Put on a Vulcan kit with a new Carter pump on the frame rail. 5 months later, swapped the Carter for a FASS hpfp. Still running fine, no codes, VP44 seems to have survived. My theory is that all this happened during the cold months, so therefore, my VP's electronic module didn't suffer from lack of fuel to cool it. I guess it will go someday, but it hasn't yet! Just got back from a 1000 mile trip to Mexico. I have seen some posts on these forums from guys who ran a year or more with zero fuel pressure. Others lost the VP 10 minutes after the LP quit.

My truck had the same thing happen to it, same codes and no fuel pressure, I went ahead and bought a Hot Rod IP and Fass system. Depending on wat you are going to do with your truck I would consider that route. I like to sled pull, and hit up the drag strip every once in a while. I figured I probably ran at least 3 months with 0 pressure, and it was still holding up till I replaced it. But it can last 3 years or 3 mins.

Read the fine print on the inside of the back cover of the 2001 Warranty Information booklet. It explicitly states that warranty coverage applies to all vehicle owners. There are no warranty transfer fees or registration required for any owner of the vehicle model year 2001.

Thanks, will read it. I have to start a shut down this coming Mon. and will have to work til end of Dec. Once, I took a dealer and insurance agent to small claims court when wife hit a deer. Dealer sent a lawyer who delayed the case and I missed 2 work days, but they settled by fixing the car. Going to Cummins in Charlotte for 5yr. warranted LP. May try to test the IP until shutdowns are over (Jan) and then test the dealer. Thanks everyone for the advice. Eric.

Drove 50 miles to cummins, charlotte, salesman apparently "misspoke" over phone--6 mon. unlimited warranty on LP. Turned down their $1800IP as well as the $700 install. Pulled old LP--did not remove starter as manual instructs, moved fuel filter housing as suggested in FAQ post--great advice. Before moving, drained and removed filter, cleaned the inside bottom of the nasty housing (1/2" wooden dowel shoving a clean (new one each pass) blue shop paper towel, as suggested in another post. Did not undo supply line quick disconnect as manual instructs, couldn't figure out how. Good tip to stand on cooler (in FAQ post). Contacted Dealer--no warranty. Contacted Real Diesel--no reply (vacation?). Plan on heading to G'boro and Diesel Injection service after new LP install. I can't miss work to take dealer to court. If truck behaves (no dead pedal after 50 miles), may turn around and cross fingers till Jan.
