New Clutch
New Clutch
My Clutch is slowly going and i'm in need of some help. My Truck : Ram 2500 6 speed diesel, guages, power edge comp and open exhaust. I do some pulling of Tractors and Equiptment. Please give me some contact Info and suggestions/prices on clutch replacment. If anyone lives in KY close to Fleming Co. and wants to help let me know.
Give Peter at South Bend Clutch a call. If you cannot afford that you might try a LUK ProGold, which is a bit stronger than the stock and can be obtained from a parts house.
By far the smoothest, best pulling clutch is the SBC if you are working it hard.

I read a while back that the LUK clutches were good. Here is a site. http://www.carolinaclutch.com/6%20speed%20dodge.htm. They are cheaper then the SB. On the other side SB has worked great for many people including me. Im sure someone will have some more info.
I tried to save some money on a clutch and bought one that said it would hold 1000 ft/lb. it would, BUT when you let off the clutch loaded it would chatter your teeth out and almost bounce the front tires off the ground. I finally broke down and bought a SBC and have never been more happy with a clutch. H.I.D tried to tell me to go with a SBC an I didn't listen and it cost me an extra $500 or so. Go with the SBC and you won't be disappointed.

Unless you're shooting for huge HP, the South Bend OFE is the clutch of choice. Many consider it THE towing clutch.
RustyJC has one in his truck and tows a large house on wheels. He says it's very smooth, with pedal effort like stock. It is a little more grabby at low speed (when hitching up), but it's not drastic.
I'll probably go SBC when I do it. I'll match the clutch to my HP-- OFE if I stay where I'm at, or FE if I go for more HP.

As Justin says, the Con OFE is slightly more aggressive on engagement than the stock clutch. It wants to chatter if you're slipping it at idle to maneuver the RV into a site or into its covered storage bay. The solution is to bring the RPM up to about 900 or so, then slip the clutch to get moving. The OFE doesn't mind this and in fact is smoother with higher relative speeds between the flywheel/pressure plate and clutch disc.
The Con O would probably be about as smooth as stock if you wouldn't overpower it. The OFE is probably about as good a compromise as you can get between holding power and "good manners".

I just got my SB Con OFE and I absolutely love it. It feels almost like the stock clutch and is holding my power very nicely. I just did my first tow with it and it was great; no problems what so ever with 15K behind me. As Rusty said it seems to be the best when it comes to holding and manners.

with my SBC clutch!! Can't believe the extra HP that you put to the ground with a clutch that doesn't slip!
