Need lesson on crankcase vent purpose

I just re-routed my crankcase vent using 3/4'' heater hose like many recomended. I ran it up along intake horn and headed down to the frame rail, using zip ties to secure. I guess my question is how exactly does this vent work and what is the purpose of it. Will oil ever reach the end of this tube anymore? Sorry I'm not very knowledgable on this subject...

It must run down only. You have created a trap which will cause problems.
as to the purpose of it, all engines must vent gases which leak by the rings to avoid pfrressuring the crankcase and blowing gaskets. The bottle which is attached to the end of the hose catches the condensed oil and water vapors for later disposal in an environmentally responsible manor.

The original hose creates a trap...it runs strait up about 4 inches and then does a complete 90 strait down. am i missing something here?

I did mine 100K miles ago and have never had any problems with it. It will still drip occasionally so I guess that's a good thing. I really wouldn't worry about having a trap on it.

the only thing wrong is your choice of hose.....you need oil resistant hose
the heater hose will close off and generally self destruct over time... by the way, that's how mine is done...i changed heater hose 4 times before i got smart and used oil resistant

I did the same 150,000 miles ago. Hose is fine, vent works great too. It took 50,000 for it to finally break in and stop dropping at the frame. These are very good motors.

Plumb...

The "trap" you want to avoid is a bend in the hose that accumulates oil -- where both ends of the hose are above the bend -- like a U. An upside down U is not a trap, as oil will run not accumulate.

If oil accumulates in the bottom of the U, then it seals off thecrankcase. This causes excess gas pressure in the crankcase and will either blow the oil in the hose all over, blow the dipstick out of its tube, or blow one or more seals -- None of which you want to happen.

while you're at it, you should drain the antifreeze and pull the rad and take it to the local car wash with a big can of degreaser and wash the fins off. It will be full of messy, oily dirt.

Thanks for all the info guys. And ya thats next on my list...I'll wait till I get back from scheid. This week is busy busy. I'll prolly run this hose for a while untill it shows sign of wear and switch it over the the oil resistant hose.

Better check the Vacuum pump for leaking, often mistaken for blow by oil. has 50 dollar seal kit available nowadays. Look underneath with a flashlight.
