Need a clutch, any recommendations?

90k miles, it started slipping about 2 weeks ago. The truck is stock, but lots of stop and go driving. I was figuring either NAPA or the dealer. Any suggestions?

Neither.

Dealer is going to rape you on it, plus, at this point while you are in there you might as well do an upgrade of some sort.

Valair, South Bend and Luk are some to look at.

My first clutch went 185K. I replaced it with a southbend 13" I got the kit which included the flywheel, clutch, disc, throw out and pilot bearing. $ 700.00.

The first one was really noisy sounding like a knock in the bell housing area.

Got another kit, it was ok. I still feel there is a problem with the balance of the entire set up since I notice a vibration above 70mph from the drive train.

Don't feel the vibration going up thru the gears until I get above 70. Its stupid because if it does it at above 70 it should do it above 2000 rpm's also. It does not.

The clutch picks up the fifth wheel much better than the stock clutch I had in it.

The South Bend is definitly much nosier than the stock clutch.

I doubt your problem is the clutch. I have A southbend and zero noise no vibrations and it wont slip no matter what I drag behind it. The pedal effort and feel is about the same as stock. It does grab hard and does not like to be ridden while backing up which is basicly normal. I would go with another Southbend if the need ever arises. I did not want to do the job twice is why I went with the Southbend.

I had to do the job twice. Two clutch kits in and out. The shop that did the install said the noise I had in bellhousing area was the input shaft bearing on the NV5600. No way I told them. I had no noise or vibration in the drive train.

They torn the tranny down to prove it, they ended up eating a bunch of money. New bearings and brass going back together. The first clutch also had a vibration above 70mph. Put in the second clutch, no more noise and the engagment point of the pedal was now the same as the stock clutch. The first one enganged at the bottom of the pedal and chattered. So don't think SB is perfect.

The vibration I have is in the clutch/flywheel. This is a bigger clutch in diameter than the stock clutch. All the info I read here says that the SB clutch is noisier than a stock unit.

I also went with the bigger diameter clutch and flywheel. I have no noise or vibration.
What kind of noise are you getting?

The noise I have is more of a heavy vibration that you can feel in the floor area and especially in the Shifter above 70 mph. At idle, when the clutch is engaged in nuetral, there is a noise coming from the bellhousing area. It goes away as soon as the clutch is disengaged. The bellhousing area noise is not loud until you park the truck next to a solid wall which aplifies the nosie. Its been doing that since installation. The first SB clutch make a knocking noise when the clutch was engaged. That noise also disapeared as soon as the clutch was disengaged.

I posted that last March and serveral other people on the form had a similar problem.

The clutch has been installed now since Feb 08. Nothing has gotten louder nor has the vibration increased above 70 mph. I tow at 65. No noise or vibration there.

I'm going to have the larger imput shaft installed (1.25 to 1.375) in the tranny in January. So I will have good look at wants in there then.

Going to install some 275 injectors and get a banks quick turbo with the big head waste gate controller to add about 10psi of boost. With the HyperPac
that should put me just over 650ft/lbs torque and about 320hp. Gonna change the rear as well to 4:10. As you might guess I'm setting the truck up for towing my fifth wheel. It lugs a little with 3:55 gears towing the fiver.
