Mystery Switch
Mystery Switch
I realize that the mystery switch where you can lockup the convertor has been discussed MANY times.
The question I have is I was wondering where you guys are putting the actual switch?
I did a search on here and didn't come up with anything much. I was hoping to see a few pics or at least some written info.
SO.... help me out with some ideas.
So far I'm thinking of using a dimmer switch on the floor like the older trucks had.

When I do mine I think I'll use a foot switch (like the old headlight dimmers) so I can hit it without taking my hands off the wheel...safety first (10 & 2)
and have a light on my gauge pod that comes on when engaged.

I got word that there is a programmable lockup switch that can set lockup mph using cruise control buttons...anyone using this? A friend of mine who is using this says his tranny shifts like a manual instead of that winding out the revs before the thing finally goes into lockup right around 40-45 mph grrrrrrrrr - then finally 'clunk' lockup! (man I hate that waiting and winding the revs, especially first thing on a cold morning when trying to merge into the hwy or something, seems like forever, I'm saying to myself "c'mon lockup already!")...I want to set mine to lock up around 30 or 35 mph and be done with it...no muss no fuss
I am begining to wounder if i need that on my truck. When i take off in the morning it takes forever to change gears from 1st to 2nd. my RPM's go all the way to 2600 or 2700 before it even changes. there are times i have to let go of the fuel just for it to change gears. You guys think it will fix the problem if i put this on it?

The Mystery switch will not change when and how it shifts from 1st to 2nd. If you have delay shifting gears, it could be several things. You say it only happens when cold? I have found that these tranny are cold blooded. When cold they just don't operate properly. If it happens all the time, you either have to adjust the TV cable (kick down), whick effects full throttle shifts; or if you have an after market V/B, adjust the governer pressure(i'm not sure if this is possible on stock V/B), which effects the light throttle shifts.
OR check you fluid. Maybe it's just time for a change. Dirty fluid can cause the bands and clutchs to slip. Even a little slipping can cause problems shifting.
EDIT: If the shift delay happens pretty much all the time, maybe the governer pressure switch and or sensor might be bad. This seems to be a common occurence.

I believe the tranny won't shift into lockup due to cold temp. The ecm/pcm which ever has a temp sender for the tranny won't allow a shift into lockup until 75* or 55 mph whichever comes first, helping warm up the tranny some.
What I've read on here anyway.

That is some helpful information. So you are saying that the tranny will not shift in cold weather until either 55mph or 75*? I have been curious about this because of the real cold weather we have been having hear in IN lately and my truck not shifting as smooth.

"Shifting" gears and torque converter "Lockup" are two different things. In cold weather the ECM will keep the torque converter from a full "lockup" intill warm. Other factors are the reason for im-proper "shifting" from 1st to 2nd in cold weather, not the ECM.
Yup shift normal for 1-3 but not 3rd lockup until the temp or speed is meet, I'm just regurgitation what I've read, been told.
