MAP sensor, low voltage/low boost code

Has anyone had luck cleaning & re-using a MAP sensor ? I haven't seen the business end of one, so I don't know if there's an orifice, plunger or diaphram that might be successfully cleaned.
Seems to be only available through a Dodge dealer at $117.00 + tax.
Does Cummins sell one for less ? Does any aftermarket manufacturer offer one as a turbo boost sensor ?

My '99 24v starts & runs OK, mileage OK @ 19-21, just has an annoying mid-range flat spot.

Thanks, daveg.

They should be less than half that price at Cummins. Sometime they get carried away with the % of profit at the dealer.

"Sometimes"?... You are nice to them. When I visit them their eyes start to glow red, they look for the wallet bulge in my pockets...

I bought one from Cummins for $70 IIRC but it turned out that it was the boost fooler and not the MAP so I have an extra now just in case.

I ended up with a carquest boost sensor for $ 96. I'm thinking I should have gone with a boost fooler. I don't know anything about them.
What's the advantage, do you get morepowerrrrrrrrrrr ?

It's not that you get more power from a Boost Fooler, but it does fool the stock PCM so you can turn the turbo up and produce more boost.

When left stock, any boost over 20 or 21 lbs will cause the PCM to throw an "OverBoost Condition" code. With the Boost Fooler fooling the PCM, an adjustable boost elbow installed and some kind of fueling box, your turbo should be able to make up toward 30 to 35 lbs not problem.

Someone was saying that with an auto trans. you had to use a "j" hook, not an adj. elbow. I don't get that.

No. On your 1999 truck you have a HX35W turbo. Well, you should , that is. The HX has a diapraham controlling the wastegate. On one end of it is a small rubber tube that goes to the outlet section of the turbo. You disconnect the rubber hose, pull out the little stock elbow and replace with an adjustable one.

On 2001 and 2002 trucks, they came with a HY35W. It has hard tubing which can't be replaced easily. So then they would need a "J" hook to close off the wastegate.

Yeah, my '99 has a diaphram actuator, I couldn't see why the elbow wouldn't work. It looks like 1/8" pipe thread, a guy could install a 1/8" needle valve, elbow, etc. for less than the $20 for the boost elbow. I also thought about installing appropriately sized spring & clamp from my vast collection by drilling a 1/8" hole in the web on the back of the turbo body, hook one end of the spring through it & clamp the other to the actuator rod & adj. spring tension for more boost.
Do you need a boost fooler to run a boost el ?

You don't need to do anything other than a boost elbow for your turbo. I have an automatic tranny also. I have an adjustable boost elbow. I have mine set for 35 lbs. But before I adjusted it properly, I've seen much more. Of course HX35 are really not to efficiant that high and our stock head gasket get a workout with boost psi over 40.

thanks

JPR, thanks. I know what too much boost can do. 30-35psi. will do. I like power without compromising dependability since I fix it if I break it. I'll probably build my own elbow, it's basically a valve used to set desired pressure, right ?. Any thoughts on my spring idea ?
