LP replacement...opinions?

Bought my 2002 .5 2500RAM with 90k 1 month ago. Runs like a champ, no codes etc.

Went to dealer for 90k service which included adjusting valves. Dealer says they order new in-tank lift pump to avoid LP/VP44 problems as encountered by many, he will do this at no charge under 100k warranty. Truck is going in this morning. I will take the free--bee pump but have read here that people complained of lower fuel pressures with in tank pump. Perhaps still add electric pump?

Also, after valve adjustment, seems like I hear more valve chatter and when getting off the gas, a slight exhaust leak such as a pffft sound. Any suggestions. I suppose lose valves are better than to tight?

Any insights on this. Thanks in advance

I would call them and stop the in tank pump project.... if you plan on adding more HP! The FASS for example will not work with the in tank pump because the tank pump can't keep up on the pressure/flow. Suspect it's the same with other after market fuel pumps.

The 02 lift pumps have been holding fairly well due to improved mfg. The intank system is unproven and I would not do it on my truck!

Your choice.

You don't list a location but colder weather makes my valves sound louder at startup?

If you have the time & the interest, I would pull the valve cover and see where they set the lash. Dodge allows a BIG range but most here recommend .010 (intake) & .020 (exhaust); kind of middle to tight in the range.

RJ has great advice. I concur- stay away from the intank pump, and check the valve lash. I did mine to the very bottom of the specs.

Thanks for the input guys. I used to do valve adjustments on my '91 4cyl Trooper and it was easy. I would love to learn to do it on my Dodge. Is it a complicated process and aside from the clearance gauge, any special tools?

They are in the process of the pump installation. I may have to live with that. Dealer did recommended it and I am not having to pay for it. Oh well. I am by no means looking for more HP, I am happy with the power I have. I am simply looking to avert VP44 commplications. Will the tank pump cause problems?

Won't cause problems that I know of...at stock.
Go to FAQ/Tech Facts section, in header, for valve adjustments. Toughest part is getting Valve cover off
https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...n&onlynewfaq=1

Lots of good reading there for new dodge owners!

Don't worry about it. You can always get a Draw Straw II and put in there. That will bypass the module all together.

Thanks again to all. Looked at the valve adjustment post. Incredible and looks as simple as my Trooper was. Really great stuff. Spoke extensively with the mechanic doing the work and he quickly recognized my enthusiasm for Diesels. He took quite an interest in this forum, as he himself drives a 3500RAM. Looks as if people at this dealership actualy give a hoot which is good news to me.
