Angry Low fuel+Hills=VP44 failure?

I just had a new VP 44 4000 miles ago. Went to a jobsite on a hill side with low fuel - got a check engine light. Truck stopped on the hill on the way home -no start-- towed it. Still had 1/4 tank.

With the long tank on the 1999 Dodge 3500 Cummins 4x4 Dually Quad cab it seems steep hills might be a no-no with low fuel.

Haven't completely checked it out yet but I think it's toasted.

The 1999 doesn't seem to indicate the codes on the odometer w 3 key -off/on's as mentioned on this forum. What type of code checker will give me the codes for this- Napa is the only major parts dealer here in town.

I had some work done on my truck, and it used to go quite a ways after it "dinged" for fuel,I ran it out the other day when It should'nt have,I'd bet that you just ran out of fuel.If not then I'd have someones attention about the problem where they replaced your IP.

You nailed that one -- gauge showed 1/4 tank - going up hill ran it out-- the long tank has a lot of room for fuel to go to the back and not get to the pickup tube.

I pulled the pick-up/ sending unit assembly out of the tank - it is telescoping - all but 1 screw was gone and it was not the right screw- seems the previous owner had problems with this too. I measured the distance to the bottom of the tank - set the slide section and put 4 new screws with washers into the plastic to keep it extended properly. Still seems as if it is low on fuel pressure at the boost pump 12lbs to less when accellerated - not set up for road test but not necessary at this point - its too low. I'm going to add the frame boost pump and gauges for a start.

Getting a P0720 code also- will research that here.

Thanks for the postings and help. Great forum.

Checked out the codes-and postings on it here. Output speed sensor on trans. Went to NAPA - told him what the forum said - part should cost about $23 -- he said -no $22.80. He was amazed at the information I got here as the part was not in his computer- had to go to a paper catalogue. I put the sensor on -- no more check engine code.

I ordered the P4602RV while there.

I hate it when two unrelated things happen at the same time -- makes it rough to troubleshoot.

Anyway, once again - great forum - thanks to everyone.

Anyone know if there is a check valve inside the tank - if not I think I have a plugged screen if there is another screen or sock around the end of the suction tube. I may have to pull the unit out of the tank again - the big round screen on the bottom was open but I didn't look above the big round float inside the screen, which I assume is the low fuel light float.

Just talking to myself, but reading more of the forum I see that the fuel module is supposed to extend by itself to stay on the bottom of the tank- screws were still supposed to be in it though - it only had one. Looks like its going to get worked on more anyway. Good thing I have a dump bed I can raise to get right to the top of the tank. This is the original mickey mouse module.

I would sugest that in the future you look at replaceing the pic up line in the tank with a better setup than stock. Also if you don't have a Smarty yet I would highly recomend getting one. It reads codes and some other stuff

"1/4 tank syndrome" comes to mind. I've lost count of the tow in's over the years where the fuel gauge showed a 1/4 to 1/8 when they were actually empty.

I think I will do something about the pickup tube when I add the second pump. It seems to be where fuel is restricted - probably a dirty screen.

I don't think the 1/4 tank thing will get me again. Thanks for the replies.
