Loud POP
I need some help diagnosing a problem. I was driving my truck today up a steep mountain pass (8000 ft.) with my camper and trailer, aproximate weight 10,000 lbs. I was doing about 65mph, EGT's were about 800, tranny temp about 190 degrees when I here a LOUD POP.
I thought I blew out a tire on the trailer. So I immediately pulled over to take a look. No flats, or other obvious damage, so I get back in and try to merge back on the highway.
Now I find I have no power, I have it floored and am maybe doing 10mph. And as the pass gets steeper, I slow down even more, so I pull over again. Then I notice that my boost gauge is reading 0. So I'm guessing I blew the turbo?
But other then "0" boost the motor sounds normal and all other gauges are reading normal. My only other thought is it could be a transmission issue, but the boost gauge makes me think it has to be the turbo. Or could it be something else?
Now I have no experience with diesels so what should I be looking for to figure out what broke and what damage it caused.
Thanks.

I would start at the intercooler boots, check carefully, a rip may not be visible until you take them off. If that's not it, start looking at the seams of your IC.
Before you start pulling stuff off, look at all the plumbing from the turbo to the intake. Check the air filter, too.
When you pull the IC boot off the cold side going to the IC, spin the turbo, see if it's free and spins true.
HTH...

Thanks for the help, it was the intercooler boot that came off. The turbo looks good, cleaned the air filter and tightened all the hose clamps while I as it.
Is it common for these boots to come off or should I be checking for other problems?

I would not be too worried about it... I have some aftermarket silicone boots on mine, and they have held great. That's up to you. I bet that it blew because of the band clamp, not the boot...
If it comes loose again, I would look at new clamps.

I would drive on. I had it happen once while getting onto I35 at WOT with the D3 on the goose neck. Scared my buddy so bad he actually screamed, or maybe it was a yelp (the sound of a dog gettin hit by a car kinda)
..
But thankfully the clamp was still there, and I tightened it back down on the side of the highway. Since then its been fine! I usually retorque clamps under the hood when i do a service just in case. I hate wrenchin on the side of the road!!!
