Longevity...24 V 2nd Gen Trucks

I've seen 12V folks with 200K, 300K, even 400K miles on their trucks & still goin strong!

How about the 24V with VP44 equipped injection pumps...what would be interesting to know would be:

1) how many miles you have?

2) how many VP44's you've replaced? (if you bought your truck used then the number of VP's inside the number of miles you've driven since purchased)

this may give an idea to some way of gauging longevity of the 24V 2nd gen trucks...

I'll start off

1) 32K
2) first VP44

Stock LP replaced with Fass...factory fuel filter and housing removed in place of Fass filter & housing and Water Seperator combo unit with the kit

hope this info may help...thanks

My cousing just traded his 02 for an 07. It pulled between 6k and 16k everyday, 35 miles or more each way and it had 289,000 miles on it with the original LP and VP still on it. He said the only time the hood was opened was to change the oil.

I know someone who had 700k miles on his two years ago. I haven't talked to him since, but he still has it. Pulls a backhoe every day with it. Only thing he had done at 700k was belts and a water pump. It all depends on how you maintain it and treat it.

whoa!! 700K is a lot of miles! original motor with well maintainance seems to have potential for longevity...any info on the VP....or was it the same VP for all those miles?

My truck is still cutting its teeth with 147,000 miles. About 100,000 or so of which the truck has been bombed in some form or fashion.

Replaced the original vp at 100,000 mile and will do the same at 200,000 whether it needs it or not. Cheap maintenance in my opinion. $100 for every 10,000 miles driven.

I had a 2002 Dodge CTD 24 valve until last year. The truck was mildly upgraded (486 H.P.) and in 94,000 miles I put two (2) VP-44's on it and five
lift pumps and that was WITH an aftermarket fuel system with bigger banjo bolts and -8 line from the fuel tank all the way to the VP. Out of the four Dodge CTD Pickups I have owned it gave me the MOST problems and I will NEVER own another Dodge CTD 24 valve VP-44 powered truck again!

I have an article from the local paper about the guy who has 980,000 miles on his I think 2002. He did two services on the engine. I will dig up the article, scan it and post it here.
P.S. My own has about 130,000 on it, nothing to brag about but it means it has a lot of life left in it. I plan to keep it in the family for longer than I will live.

2001, 200,000km (125,000 miles)

10 lift pumps, finally one made it out of warranty and got swapped for a Glacier Diesel Kit.

5 VP44's

1 set of injectors and feed tubes as a result of a nasty VP failure.

Other than those issues, and a strange knock that I tore the engine down for, and could not locate. No other problems. ( feel free to wipe your monitor, that IS sarcasm dripping from it)

The front end has been redone, all the u-joints and hanger bearing as well.

Truck/engine has been babied since new, oil and all filters changed every 5,000km, not driven hard, highway miles it sees almost 110km/h once in a while, mostly a steady 100km/h

Just got a good one I guess.

I can only imagine what must happen to an engine to require a new set of injector feed tubes! A direct hit from RPG?..

Honestly enough, that is almost what it looked like, shrapnel everywhere.

Basically some fragments of the pumping apparatus migrated up through the entire system after what we might call a 'catastrophic failure' of the pump chambers, made a mess of everything. there was also some mild crap went back through the return line, and was found in the bottom of the tank module later on.

That is how it goes some days

146K, driven it for ~1K of those miles, it's in the shop receiving a new VP and LP at this very moment... Hopefully with some additives and the insane preventitive maintance I throw at my vehicles I won't go through another one in this trucks lifetime *knock on wood*...

162,000 miles. 1vp and 2carter lp. bought truck with 100,000 miles on it. replaced tranny, batteries and rebuilt starter, ball joints, wheel bearings, and other misc. front end parts. Going to indiana next tue. with it. will have my laptop with me in case it breaks down while enroute so i can get on here and get some help with it. I love the truck but it has a lot of proving to do.. My 93 f-150 had over 350,000 miles on a 300 6cyl. that has never been into and still does not use burn oil although it leaks it. if the cummins can make it that long i will be happy. So far its halfway there and i have almost spent more in parts for it than i did when i bought the ford(4300 bucks with 88k on it. I might be a little more forgiving if the cummins was in a ford to begin with as i am somewhat partial.
